We appreciate your email.
Public Works has initiated a different process than in years past for taking pothole complaints. You can still go online and enter the information by going to the following web link: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/publicworks/traffic/traffic_pothole.
We will now be:
Requesting information about the type of pavement defect / issue being reported.
Checking the Capital Improvements website (http://www.minneapolismn.gov/cip/2012/index.htm)
Checking to make sure that the same block has not been previously reported. We are going to be doing more duplicate checking which now covers the entire block -corner to corner, intersection to intersection. Once we have entered a request for a specific block we will try not to enter any other requests for the same block.
Identifying which government agency maintains that section of road. In some cases, the request will be forwarded on to Hennepin County.
Has there been, or is there currently any work being done on the street? (crews digging)
Are you aware if there has been a water main or pipe break in the area within the last year?
Is the pothole you are reporting rectangular in shape?
Pothole
The word pothole can apply to various pavement defects that are typically associated with the normal aging of pavements, but are usually the result of moisture infiltration and freeze-thaw cycles during the winter season. They may range in shape, size and depth, and can occur in all pavement types including asphalt, concrete or other pavements. They may be the result of base collapse under the pavement, failure and material loss in cracks and joints, separation of pavement layers, or simple deterioration and material of the pavement structure or street surface.
Utility Cut:
A rectangular shaped (with straight cut sides) hole in the street, sidewalk, or boulevard made by a contractor to access utility lines/pipes. For example: a contractor for Qwest needs to install fiber optic cable under the street and sidewalk or a private plumbing contractor needs to repair a portion of the water main in the street due to a private residence leak.
Grate / Manhole / Pavement Problem
This could be a missing cover, broken grate, loose pavement around the manhole, etc. Each cover should contain the name of the utility company responsible for the utility hole and cover – Water, Sewer, Xcel, Qwest, Center Point, etc.
Sinkhole
A depression or hole in the ground caused by the erosion of rock below the surface. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop. When there is no longer enough support below ground there can be a sudden collapse of the land surface – known as a “sinkhole”.
If there is anything else we can help you with please contact us. Thank you for emailing the City of Minneapolis.
