I agree that this situation is unacceptable given the volume of pedestrians at this downtown location. Please sign the petition at www.newhavensafestreets.org to ensure that this kind of planning is not overlooked in the future, and that measures are taken to ensure the safety of all road users. In the meantime please continue to call your state and local elected officials about traffic safety issues like this one; this will eventually help increase their priority.
It’s a pretty intimidating street. Those two lanes on George are some of the widest in the city, perhaps 15–17 feet in width. Speeds are quite fast. Honestly, this road would not be safe to cross, even with a crosswalk. If the city could find the money to build curb extensions here, and allow parking on both sides of the street, then I could definitely see a crosswalk working here. As it stands now, I would recommend crossing at York or College. This is frustrating because it makes it really hard for residents of the Towers to get to the bus stop on the south side of George. A curb extension or two (or a raised median) is desperately needed. If only we had the several tens of thousands of dollars it would cost to build something like that…
