Amen. I already called them to remove it. I was told we had to send an Email at the end of June and they would remove it.

Funny, I was told the same thing...except someone came by this afternoon and removed the bin. Don't know if it was the City or not, but it's gone.

Update from the Sanitation Department:

"Dear Curbside Recycling Customer:
The Sanitation Department has received your request declining delivery of your blue Universal Residential Curbside Recycling container.

The container distribution vendor will be able to remove your container when the citywide delivery schedule is complete. In the meantime, we encourage you to consider the overall benefits offered by Universal Residential Curbside Recycling and give it a try.

If you still wish to return your container, please email your request, including your name and the address where the container is located, to CurbsideRecycling@stpete.org after July 1. You will be contacted with a date and instructions on where to place the container for vendor pick up.

Yah, I know. It's not a fee in my mind. You pay a fee for services you wish to have. This is a tax, pure and simple!

Why wait till July I'l do like others have done already. They have taken the container back to Sanitation compound on 28 Street and droped it off

I don't see what the big deal is. I was already taking my recycling stuff to the crescent lake drop off location and I'm totally okay paying $3 a month so I don't have to haul it down there myself.

A couple of people in the neighborhood have all ready taken theirs back to sanitation and droped it off. This is just like Tropicana Field....it was shoved down out throats. I may be taxed, but they can't force me to go and I have yet set foot in the place. And they wonder why attendace is low. People are feed up. Instead of blowing 50 million on a Pier that did not need repaired...they could have treated the citizens of this town to free recycling.

Not only is it a tax, only sanitation accounts with 1-4 users are being charged the $36 +tax per year--businesses, condos, etc. not being forced to pay or participate. No extra tax/fee for them.

Good for you! The big deal is that the few are pushing their agenda on the many. I'm happy that you like this program...keep using it but don't force others into something that they don't want and charge a tax for it at the same time.

Neat Nick.......Thats going to be $36 yr your paying (for now) whether your a household of 1 or 6 people...add that up and thats $ 2.5 million a year the city is making not including what they make off everyones recycled items your tossing away for something you did for free. That does not make any sense at all, just because you want to be lazy. Some of us save our money for other important things in life than to have the city to make money off your old items and bill you for doing it when places like Publix will recycle plastic bags and styofoam for FREE. There probably outsourcing these jobs and then they will want to make regular trash pic up once a week. Just think, if the city would have not blown 50 million on a Pier that had nothing wrong with it, the city could have done something nice for the citizens and made recycling program free. Anyway, enjoy washing your trash.

Businesses and condos aren't being forced to pay for it??!! And we think owning a home is the American Dream! We're being held hostage by the city. Again. Some of us elderly can't trot stuff to Crescent Lake or deal with two heavy bins.

I understand that it this has been an unpleasant occurrence for some of us. It does seem like the fee is higher than it should be, and it does seem like it happened without our knowledge. However on my street there were many people who paid for the old recycling program. So I've be doing an informal survey of my neighbors and it seems to me more people are okay with the new recycling than against it. When people who are okay with something they usually don't say so. It is the people who are upset about a thing that talk about it. Unfortunately I feel that the people who are the most upset about this are actually in the minority. Recycling is part of our future. It's not going to go away

We may be in thr minority but that doesn't mean we can't be displeased. I have no intention of using that container. I dont have the time nor the inclination to sort and wash my trash. Nor to have 2 different trash cans in my house.So recycle away Nick.

Be prepared to see more strangers in your neighborhood riffling through your blue bin so they can take the items you've cleaned and paid to be picked up to a recycling center in exchange for money. (Which is just what the City is going to do anyway)

Oh my goodness some of you are SO grumpy. I didn't say you should not be displeased. That is certainly your right. I did not say you should use your container. It's your choice. Also, I we never had a problem with people going through the old recycling bins on my street so I don't know why you think there will be a problem now. Recycling is not bad. Recycling is growing in popularity and acceptance all over the world. Sure, you don't have to participate, but do you really want to be like the people who grumbled about unleaded gas, mandatory seat-belt use, no-smoking in restaurants and giving women the right to vote?

Also, if you will note, I did say that I think the fee is higher than it should be and that it did seem to happen without a lot of us knowing anything about it. Also, I agree the bins are large and unsightly, but our garbage bins are ugly too and we survived.

Wow! This is a hot discussion. I agree that this blue bin thing was handled very poorly by the City. I hope the mayor's action center is listening to these discussions. Ultimately people should have been given a choice in whether or not they have to pay / have a bin. They should also publish the financials showing exactly how much it costs to run vs. how much money is made from the recycled materials. The way it was handled feels heavy handed. By the way, I was already recycling on my own for free, but I will probably use the new bin...but here's why: because I have room for one and I have a big gate. Some people simply don't have the room for it (are you listening City Leaders?). Also, when I calculate my time / effort and the gas it takes me to load up my truck with my recycling each month and take it to the drop off location costs me around $3..so it's a wash for me, but not everyone is in the same boat. Some people DON'T Have $3 more each month, so this is taking away from something else. I know we are supposed to be a "green city." I know that other green cities do the same kind of recycling program, but this could have been handled much, much better. It seems like the pier issue would have taught the city leadership about the importance of giving St Pete residents a choice. If I'm wrong about any of the things I've stated, I apologize. This is just how I see things with the information I have at this time.

You don't have to come by and pick mine up. Consider the case closed. I just saved the city some fuel and did my part on recycling at the same time. My container is sitting back at the sanitation dept on 28 St. because I found out they could not pick up returns until sometime in July now because of the back log. So I just loaded it up and returned it. Its now sitting there with all the blue containers that have been turned in by others. Sorry to say, but this program is going to be the poster child of the city fouling up big time of what could have been a good idea, in order to make millions every year. I'm very disappointed with the leadership of this town. I guess they where just blinded by all those big dollars there going to be raking in. Now all I have to do is wait for the elections to come.

Wrong? You are absolutely right on this issue! The City once again misstepped and now there's a backlash from a lot of citizens. I brought my concerns regarding no place to store and no alley pick-ups to Steve Kornell back in March. Know what he did? He had the City come out to grade my alley! Next, I expressed my concerns to Darden Rice. Ms. Rice did reply by sending me a fact sheet on recycling. I told her I would rather she figure out how I was to roll this huge container from the back of my house to the front over St. Augustine grass. Now all of a sudden I read in the paper how she's "looking for ways to make this work"...really? She sure didn't sound so helpful to me when I originally inquired nor did the Council listen to the members of other subdivisions regarding alley pickups. This City Council sure has a lot to learn!

You would think businesses and condos would generate a lot of items, so why exclude them? Homeownership is being penalized by the council.

The council should remember I'm a registered voter, too.

Nickin - the laws you mention are life-savers not at all comparable to throwing my rinsed coke can in a recycling bin. Yeah, we don't have to participate, but will still be charged $2.95 monthly.

At least consider reducing trash pickup to once a week instead of twice a week.
