Almost every intersection along Nicoll is problematic, from Mitchell Drive to Canner to Willow (possibly the worst) on down to Lawrence and Edwards. Grrr.

Add the Lawrence Street/ Mechanic Street stop sign to the list of "completely ignored". I often almost get hit when turning left off of Lawrence onto Mechanic street by drivers turning left onto Lawrence from the Mechanic street triangle at State street. Lawrence from State street is treated like a super highway to access east rock at rush hours am and pm! It also has very high speed traffic turning onto Lawrence from State southbound. I'm amazed there haven't been more accidents!

This is a problem all over New Haven. That's why Gillespie and others want traffic cams. There are a large number of drivers in this city who seem to think the law does not apply to them. Maybe if we get the traffic cams on the lights, then there will be a bigger police presence at intersections with stop signs. Just a thought.

Traffic cams will simply increase traffic at stop-sign intersections as drivers avoid the camera intersections and blow through the stop signs when they're in a hurry.

Are you implying that people are incapable of driving safely? I have encountered plenty of courteous, patient drivers in Connecticut. The issue we want addressed is the perception that the NHPD simply ignores traffic violations. Almost everyone I talked to while volunteering for the city's Street Smarts traffic safety campaign had a story about seeing somebody blow through a red light or a stop sign right in front of a cop, and in all of the stories, the cop never does anything about it. In recent years, this has started to change, but the NHPD can't afford to spend all of its idling at street corners waiting for someone to blow through a red light. This is why we need red light cameras. We need to change the perception that NHPD never enforces traffic violations.

No, I'm not implying people are incapable of driving safely. I'm implying that they're too selfish to drive safely. The only thing they care about is where THEY have to be and when THEY have to be there, and if you try to stick a fiscal penalty in their way, they'll just go around it to "save time" and "save money". I live on Willow Street, and it might as well be a stoplight-less drag strip. People who are trying to skip the Willow lights speed even faster down Canner, ignoring the stop signs entirely.
