Noise, litter, poor behavior, bad driving. It would be good if the citizens of New Haven exercised the Golden Rule.

This is a city, with all of the noise of a city. The noise level is the same if you are in New Haven, New York, Chicago or any other city. You are goig to have the same noise issues wherever you have a large number of people living, working and playing in the same area. If you want quiet, that's what the suburbs are for.

Motorcycles are the worst offenders. How do so many get away with "straight pipes" - no mufflers?
I have yet to see one pulled over for noise violation - despite the deafening roar.

I believe they get away with it because the cops think these bikes are cool, even though the sound detracts from the quality of life here and wherever they roar. Bikers -- that is, Harley owners -- say the pipes are loud because of safety concerns: They need to let cars know they're there. Yet these same dudes ride around without a helmet, so that argument doesn't wash. It's clearly a cry for attention and probably some other psychological problems i'm not qualified to diagnose..

It is an unenforced law

The problem I have is with the motorcycles...those crotch rockets. The owners, who are
usually quite young don't find anything wrong with the noise they emit. Day and night in the
warmer months, these clods will race these bikes up and down the highways. I wish the state would
make them illegal because the noise if deafening to children, pets, and other motorists. There is
no reason for the noise to be so loud.

To "Me" - I would argue that the reason New Haven has yet to be voted one of Americas best livable cities has to do with the noise pollution allowed by our government. Even NYC has strict noise laws - which is why taxi cabs in Manhattan don't honk their horns at every turn - the fines are too high. You might want to visit again to recheck your claim, which is uninformed.

I don't think that living in a city has to mean dealing with people who don't consider their neighbors, who endanger their fellow citizens by riding motorcycles carelessly, and who think its their right to blast loud stereos in public spaces. I think that especially because we are living in a metropolitan area people need to consider those in their immediate vicinity. I'm not asking for quiet. I'm asking for livable. And Im always amazed when I hear people like yourself defend some of the most unattractive qualities of New Haven.

Agreed 100%. People pay a very high amount (in property cost, taxes, and rent) to live in downtown new haven. These motorcycles and cars with ridiculously loud music blasting, amount to obnoxious and unnecessary noise pollution. They have a negative impact on quality of life for downtown residents - no matter what time of day. I wish NHPD would please do something about this.

Noice, litter, poor behavior. And don't even think of taking your kids for a walk along the Green. Cursing, trash, drinking, people passed out on benches all times of the day and night. Only targeted areas of downtown are walkable. As a city we have totally ceded the Green and the surrounding area to the homeless and the hapless. I'd love to see that change -- it would be good economically for the city to make the downtown a rich and attractive experience for outsiders. Instead, litter, drunks, cursing.
PLEASE FIX

Noise levels are terrible all over New Haven. People have no consideration, but the most puzzling noise to me is the obnoxious beeping people do - when they reach their freinds' homes, they beep for them to come out, instead of calling them on the cell to say "I'm here, come out." Food deliverers also do this, as well as taxi companies. Everyone owns a cell phone. Instead of beeping - you're obviously too lazy to get out of your car and ring the doorbell - call your friend on the cell and advise them of your presence that way, instead of obnoxiously beeping for a full minute.
