It's hard to make out in the photo but there is a hole in the wall where there is a finished basement and a rug is draped over it. You can see a path where animals (or people?) are coming and going.

@Michael, there is a huge hole in the roof, rain openly flows out of the house. There are certainly components that are salvageable, but the back bone structure would need to be totally rebuilt. I got a peek inside one day when the owner had some workers there raiding it of any valuable parts and wood. All of the interior walls have collapsed to varying degrees. The finished basement isn't secure at all, some of the inner brick columns (foundation of the chimney perhaps) are severally leaning on cracked and separated structural beams. Without a level, I'd estimate almost 15 degrees off vertical. It was a beautiful house at one time, but it would literally need to be totally rebuilt.

Yea that place looks like it is going to fall over. I saw an opossum hanging out under the porch one time when I visited.

It is not beyond repair. It can be done it takes the right partnership. The burned house on the corner of Adams and Oglethorpe by the park was worse. After a fire and a few years of being empty it had no roof. The neighbors put a temporay roof on it and now it is a beautiful home go look at it.

It can be done it takes motivated neighbors and a motivates city. Contact historic Macon. I would be willing to put some money were my mouth is to help secure it and put a temporary roof on it.

A simple"VOTE" is all we are asking for....

So far all the neighbours are motived to have it torn down because the cost of repair would be astronomical, if at all possible. I would happily donate money to have it resolved one way or the other, but what I don't want to do is spend money on property that someone else should be fixing or demolishing. The neighbours would like to turn it into some green space that would our neighbourhood is lacking. We've offered to buy (put our money where our collective mouths are) but the owner wants $100,000+ for it. In fact, a nephew of one of the owners on the street made a very reasonable offer, and was willing to pay to get it fixed or rebuilt because they wanted to live close to their family. The point is that someone owns the property and they need to be held accountable for the disrepair its in. This isn't a case of a unknown owner like many other properties like it in the area.

The owner should be held responsible. The city could enforce the code and seize the property if possible then sell it. I can't stand to see another historic house torn down the valentine house was able to be saved as was the Douglas. So is this one. I think pushing for demolition is wrong.

Pushing for holding the owner responsible is correct. The city has a big blight push right now. I'm not sure who your councilman is your right on the line it could be the rabbi or Virgil Watkins. They should be called also. I have personally restored one of these monsters and am in the process of doing another. Don't give up on the house.

A Service Request has been issued for 640 Arlington Place, Inspector Reid has been assigned. A site visit will be made and violations documented.

Dear Historic Macon,

I live at 659 Arlington Place in Macon. The property next to mine, 645 Arlington Pl is in danger of collapsing and several people have recommended I contact historic Macon for help. The property is from the same era as my house (1870) and has many great features. I reported the property to the city in 2013 but nothing was ever done. I just filed another SCF issue with consolidated Macon-Bibb. The other owners on the street are willing to help out to secure the property and rebuild or repair it, however the owner is unwilling to sell the property or do anything to stabilize it. He thinks that with Mercer expanding the land value will increase dramatic in a few years and he will be able to sell it in any condition for $100K's. In the meantime its posing a health risk to the neighbourhood and a structural risk to my historic home if it falls.

Any advice or help is appreciated.

Progress! So what happens now?

Wahoo!!! My contact, that oversees regulations for the historic district for the city, advised filing a complaint with the property abatement office at the police department, as well as filing a complaint with the health department, in regards to the mosquitoes.

Updates:

Called the health department, they said they will come inspect and contact the owner to have the mosquito issues resolved.

There is no property abatement office at the sheriff's office that I can find (there is no more police department post consolidation).

Haven't heard anything back from Historic Macon yet.

The front door now appears to now have the lock broken and is just sitting open.

Inspector Reid has completed a Service Request for 645 Arlington Place, multiple violations were found. The responsible party has/will be contacted for an attempt to resolve all issues. Although, we make every attempt to resolve these issues in a timely manner, please understand it is a timely process.
