This is an absolute disgrace not to mention eyesore for our neighborhood. This HAS to be fixed!

This was formerly a store from which drug dealing took place, and neighbors extended a great deal of time and effort to eliminate it. This 'new' store looks like a rehash of the 'old' store and we don't want establishments like this in our neighborhood. Please make them conform to permitting and zoning regulations. .

Fix violations

This block has come such a long way since the neighbors won the battle to eliminate the previous inhabitants of this store. I would hate to see all of that effort for a newer version to be allowed to open up in it's place. If they aren't following zoning codes and getting permits to open, what makes the city think that they will be doing anything else legally? Please enforce the codes.

I don't mind this at all. I just wish it opened up on the corner of 20th and Kater.

Please get rid of this asap. Ugly and not community-building. Terrible.

Wow 'justsayin' -- totally not necessary and completely rude comment about Loretta. I take it you must rent, and are just a transient passing through our neighborhood. Oh, and let me guess, you are also in favor of NOT having permit parking so you can park your illegally-not registered where you live-insurance-fraud car on our block as well?? Obviously, the people that have worked hard to get our neighborhood looking the way you now see it, DO care how the awnings look and NO, they do not have a permit to install.

Seems you need to get a life, and maybe attend a few anger management and manners class -- maybe right after you frequent the bodega that we now have on our block.

This store does not have permits - that's the whole point of the ticket. And personal attacks on community residents are unwarranted, unnecessary, and just rude.

Ten steps backwords

In addition to other violations reported by neighbors, this store also does not have trash or recycle bins of its own. As the owners who live next door (on Carpenter Street), we have been warned and fined because they are throwing their trash and recycling in our bins.

I keep getting emails from SeeClickFix asking if this ticket can be closed, so I'm adding this comment... Unfortunately, I can't close this yet, no. But I want to work with the store and building owners in any productive/postive way possible. Since the store owner does not speak English, I recently delivered a letter to him there. I did the same in the past and got a nice letter back, apparently translated into English by someone on his behalf, and ultimately we all saw some improvements made - most notably, the new awning. This time I asked in my letter that the remainder of these issues please be fixed ASAP, and that, as promised at the SOSNA Zoning Committee meeting, a reasonable trash receptacle for a business like this be installed out front, and that the constant trash on the block be kept under control. I don't think it's too much to ask a store like this to sweep regularly out in front as well as up and down the block, when it is obvious that the majority of trash that blows all over the place originates from this store.

Wow. Just joined SOSNA and now reconsidering. A friend and I have been lamenting the lack of corner stores, now starting to wonder if they've been a casualty of gentrification. I've lived in this neighborhood since 2008 and have frequented that store. A few years ago I went in to Reyes to buy something, Hours later I realized that I'd not received the correct change. I went back and explained the situation, not really expecting them to give me my money back but figured it was worth a shot. To my pleasant surprise I was refunded the money with a huge apology the explanation that the cashier has some learning difficulties, they want him to be able to work there but understand things like this could happen occasionally. Admittedly, I had an easier time communicating with the owner because I speak Spanish but I'd suggest that if anyone took the time to talk to the owner, I don't mean by writing a letter but actually have a conversation things might be able to be worked out without quite so much neighborhood angst and ire. I mean, come on, is it really that difficult to find someone who can act as your interpreter? There's probably someone who works in the store or is in the owner's family for crying out loud.
On a personal note, I, for one,am happy to have a tacky awning if the store owners can tolerate (and embrace) an employee with special needs. Perhaps I'm more sensitive to this issue than others because I work with children with special needs but perhaps other people should be more sensitive than they are.

I'm closing this because I no longer live in the vicinity, and frankly, I'm tired of receiving notices that this report is still open, but the violations continue.

And, to the person who thinks we haven't tried to communicate, including recruiting interpreters, you are mistaken. Glad you like the place though.
