Hey Tina,
If you want to add the local department of public works to your issue you could certainly do that as well.
Emails are comma delimited on watch areas.
There are a lot of traffic calming ideas etc posted at www.newhavensafestreets.org. Dangerous intersections are unacceptable. We should have a "VISION ZERO" policy like Sweden.
Biggest issue is the excessive speed and lack of vehicles going down jefferson, and the lack of enforcement of existing speed rules. How about as a interim measure, install a speed sign at the intersection and a how-do-you-do squad car on Maplewood Avenue where the crossing guard parks. Not only will it encourage slowing down, it will go towards town deficit.
In the 39 years we have lived on Maplewood Ave, near Jefferson Ave, the frequent accidents have followed a common pattern.....drivers on Maplewood either blank out or assume they have the right to the intersection....drivers on Jefferson are going too fast to stop....and, there is the occasional Jefferson driver who chooses to stop and redirect the flow.
We have seen trees removed, bushes cut back, signs added, road markings printed.
Speed bumps and raised markings have yet to be tried...maybe they are the next step.
Got broadsided there myself while going down Jefferson and my daughter was in the backseat. Scariest day ever. That intersection definitely needs to be fixed.
County has to decide on light, but town won't make it 4 way stop - too difficult to get going up Jefferson after a stop when icy. I think the "cross traffic doesn't stop" signs have helped, but drivers who don't live nearby don't care what speed they do.
There are already flashing lights at 4 way intersection and signs that traffic does not stop yet accidents are a frequent occurance as drivers continue to ignore the signals... perhaps a speed limit sign of 15mph like maplewood village would help
I agree, this needs to be addressed. I've seen numerous accidents there, and had a close call myself on foot while pushing a baby stroller.
I've spoken with various long-time residents about this, and one 'excuse' that keeps coming up is that there isn't enough visibility when going down Jefferson for someone to stop for a four-way stop or a traffic light. But this makes no sense to me -- if they can't stop for a light, how will they stop for a person crossing the street? If there isn't an effective way to slow the cars going down the hill on Jefferson why not make it one-way going up for that block? Not quite as convenient but it's better than seeing someone get killed there.
This intersection is the subject of debate at the Maplewood Town Council Meeting at least once a year, if not more. Here's the basic reply: they can't put a light there because a stop light on Jefferson would back cars up the hill so that drivers coming over it would rear end them; I suspect this is the same reason why you can't make a left onto Glen from Wyoming in Millburn. Here's the solution:
1. Drivers on Jefferson should obey the signs and keep moving instead of stopping when they shouldn't. This happens all the time.
2. Drivers on Maplewood should stop and look both ways, then proceed.
In other words, people should drive well, not in the normal absent-minded Maplewood way.
im sorry, but some of these comments are just ridiculous.

if you got broadsided going down jefferson than the person that hit you ran the stop sign. (nothing the town can do will fix bad drivers.)
and someone said speed humps on mw ave. what??? that makes no sense. the speed humps should be on jefferson, if anywhere.
the real issue hear is that people dont follow the intersections signals. people on mw ave dont stop. and people on jefferson randomly decide to stop for no reason, or go way to fast.
so,,, the city cant fix all the bad drivers in town, which there are plenty of. so the solution... use caution when going through that intersection.
