I agree, this needs to be addressed. I've seen numerous accidents there, and had a close call myself on foot while pushing a baby stroller.
I've spoken with various long-time residents about this, and one 'excuse' that keeps coming up is that there isn't enough visibility when going down Jefferson for someone to stop for a four-way stop or a traffic light. But this makes no sense to me -- if they can't stop for a light, how will they stop for a person crossing the street? If there isn't an effective way to slow the cars going down the hill on Jefferson why not make it one-way going up for that block? Not quite as convenient but it's better than seeing someone get killed there.
This intersection is the subject of debate at the Maplewood Town Council Meeting at least once a year, if not more. Here's the basic reply: they can't put a light there because a stop light on Jefferson would back cars up the hill so that drivers coming over it would rear end them; I suspect this is the same reason why you can't make a left onto Glen from Wyoming in Millburn. Here's the solution:
1. Drivers on Jefferson should obey the signs and keep moving instead of stopping when they shouldn't. This happens all the time.
2. Drivers on Maplewood should stop and look both ways, then proceed.
In other words, people should drive well, not in the normal absent-minded Maplewood way.
im sorry, but some of these comments are just ridiculous.

if you got broadsided going down jefferson than the person that hit you ran the stop sign. (nothing the town can do will fix bad drivers.)
and someone said speed humps on mw ave. what??? that makes no sense. the speed humps should be on jefferson, if anywhere.
the real issue hear is that people dont follow the intersections signals. people on mw ave dont stop. and people on jefferson randomly decide to stop for no reason, or go way to fast.
so,,, the city cant fix all the bad drivers in town, which there are plenty of. so the solution... use caution when going through that intersection.
