What is wrong with this city? Thought it was against the law to live in an RV on a public street. Forgot that Oakland enforces no laws or very few.

I thought the exact same thing as we drove up Mandela the other night - it's become a full blown campground, unfortunately without a latrine

this is truly disgusting- personally i would not mind people occupying spaces if they were at least respectful of the community they are staying in...but this needs to be addresses.

It's time for the city to deal with these problems. It's terrible that these people have no place to live, BUT dumping sewage in the street or storm drains, or urinating in bushes is not acceptable.

This is why the core group of these people living in RVs and on streets is where they are. They have been either evicted or kicked of of the housing that was made available to them. Look at the encampments around town there is not one that is not a mini dump. They create there own ongoing problems and the tax payer get to pay for it over and over.

Agree with both of you. City leaders need to start addressing this issue instead of acting like it doesn't exist.

We have brought this up in our Oak Center meetings. The complaints have reached the city and police, but unfortunately the campers are doing nothing illegal by parking there. There is no law that prevents them from parking there overnight, etc. And if there is a time limit they just drive around and park in a new spot. We have brought up safety concerns for children too as they frequently park near the skate & children's parks.

I am sure that we can get them sited for dumping waste at least so hopefully something comes of this fix ticket.

What we need to do is get the street parking laws changed that will allow police to get the RV's out of W. Oakland permanently. They are a visual blight, a safety issue, and a general nuisance .

There should be. Its unhealthy and attracts blow flies. If caught the person should have to clean it up.

there have been 72 deaths to date by gun - could be wrong but a review of the stats looks like 1 by a police officer

a 27-year-old artist was killed 2 weeks ago and a 14-year-old boy was killed last week on his way to a BBQ party, both less a mile from my home and neither were shot by a cop. There have been many wrongful deaths, esp of black and brown people, by the worst kind of cops, but focusing on this to the exclusion the other 71 shooting deaths is just not getting us anywhere

That's why Oakland is still #2 on the most dangerous city list.

WOak Neighbor, in all fairness, I do not believe the inspector for illegally dumping on the street is the same inspector for investigating gun-shot deaths. The City of Oakland has a lot of problems, and a lot of people are working on many of those problems. We may not be satisfied with the outcomes, and it is our job to improve those outcomes, but dropping into threads about dumping with the gunshot statistics, while likely the most important issue, only serves to quell valid complaints about other problems that need to be addressed within Oakland.

The reason I did not include the gun-shot deaths or gun violence in this post is that it was not a facet of this specific problem. I wouldn't presume to diminish the seriousness of gun violence in the City of Oakland by posting it in a thread about something else.

To answer your earlier question, there is a penalty to dumping untreated waste on the streets of Oakland.

I just want to say that though many people who live on the street may in fact not be highly functional- and yes I agree many of these communities create a lot of litter and trash, I don't think that applies to all of them. Life happens and people lose jobs, etc., it's tragic. I know someone who lives in an RV, after her husband died tragically. Sadly there few safety nets in our society.

Not all the RV's are dumping. Nor are they there to molest children. I think we need to come up with a solution- actually our city needs to come up with a solution- by enforcing the law regarding dumping and working with these communities in order to address the dumping issue, which is unacceptable. The City needs to step up.

Please, let’s not try to run too far afield with this issue. It’s simply about the non-moving RVs and specifically the illegal dumping associated with these specific units. I understand that many people are having a difficult time, and I do not mind the RVs in general. This should not be a place to list biases towards RV dwellers. Making the child-molester comment creates a sense of foreboding and reinforces an existing bias.

We need to pressure the City so they enforce the anti-dumping laws, and clean up the hazardous waste. Then we should get proactive and find a long-term solution to the problem, whether it is street sweeping/no parking times on that side of the street, reliable parking enforcement, or by creating a place for the RVs to safely park and hook into water and sewer.
