Thanks for coming out today to work on this.

There is a little improvement, but the job is not anywhere near done. I do not want the whole yard lit up like a Walmart parking lot. I want it dark, dark like it was two weeks ago, dark like it has been since I moved here in 1991. Once we are back to normal, I'll be happy to leave this case closed.

Additional modifications have been made to this streetlight and the remaining issue should be resolved.

Yesterday I got an email from the SeeClickFix site that another adjustment was done. If not for that email I'm not sure any difference would have been noted, as it is a minor improvement at best.

The streetlight illuminates a very wide area, to the side, not toward the road. It is not the right thing to have on a dead end street. The light is very evident 100 feet or more to the side of the pole, deep onto my property. It illuminates the interior of my house to an uncomfortable level.

To keep this case closed, a MAJOR adjustment of some kind is required. While I am grateful for the improvement, we are not done yet, not by a long way.

I first contacted the town about this problem on 6 October. When will the town fix this problem?

The new lights have generated numerous complaints from residents living wherever the lights are installed. It is unacceptable to have the lights aimed at houses, as is the case at the end of Briarwood. Two crews have been out here but they didn't fix anything, so we are pretty much right where we were almost a month ago.

The contractor was on site today and changed the way the light is projected from the fixture. They have adjusted the fixture so it leans more towards the street and will alleviate the light from going onto the property. The streetlight does still very brightly illuminate the entire front yard, which is, unfortunately, still very evident inside the house. It is much brighter than the previous fixture, and is bothersome. Please reduce the light so that it illuminates only the street and not my property. We are not talking just a few feet here, it's probably about 100' from the pole to the house, and virtually all of that is still brightly lit.

These lights are absolutely the wrong thing for residential areas, and better suited for an industrial use. If it takes getting an appropriate fixture for this area, then let's do that.

One question I have asked a few times by phone is, what is the process for requesting a street light be removed? This fixture illuminates a dead end street, and really serves no purpose. A few reflectors on the utility pole would serve just fine to indicate the road ends.

A backlight shield has been installed and the light fixture has been dimmed to the lowest setting. We hope that this most recent repair has resolved the issue you've been experiencing with the new streetlight and apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for the additional effort to resolve this. I am not at all sure a backlight shield will help, because, as I have said from the very start, the problem is light shining out from the SIDES of the streetlight. It is located at the end of the street and there is no house behind it. The light shines in a wide arc to both sides of the street, that is the problem.

I'll see how we do with this, and for now will leave this closed. The ideal solution is to remove this totally unnecessary street light.

The backlight shield did very little to help the issue of light shining to the sides, onto my property. Only by shielding the side will any improvement be satisfactory.

Part of the problem may be that Cree doesn't make a side shield for these lights. One thing that could help, though, is a change to the light's optics. Inside each of the lights is a lens, or optic, that determines the pattern of light distribution. The Framingham lights seem to be fitted with a long dispersion optic, to light the road between the lights. The 2LG optic (probably what is in the Framingham lights) sends light (@ .1FC) 80' to each side. The 5ME optic cuts the light (at the same intensity) to 50' to each side. It may be possible to switch just the optic, without switching the whole fixture, or maybe the whole fixture could be replaced with one with the better optic. One possible downside is that the light immediately under the fixture may (or may not) end up being much brighter than it is now.
While I hate the new lights, in fairness to whoever chose them, it could have been a lot worse, as there are even brighter lights available. Some of the lights in the series were IDA compliant at one time, although that was to specs that were developed before LED streetlights were available. Because LED light behaves differently than sodium vapor light, the IDA has updated their rules, and the Framingham lights are no longer compliant.
I consider it a great wasted opportunity that these lights were selected. It is a new technology, and has not been perfected. By being a relatively early adopter, Framingham got burned, stuck with streetlights that are way too bright, and use way more energy than necessary. If the people making the selection had had more experience, we could have had an investment that everyone was happy with. I only hope that at some point in the future, someone will realize smaller lights would save enough money to pay for themselves, and replace them all again.
