The stretch of Pleasant Beach Dr. from Pritchard's place to the entrance of Ft. Ward State Park has a posted speed limit of 25 mph. It's not possible to safely drive this fast on that stretch of road. The road is so narrow that cars have to slow down to 15mph or less if an oncoming vehicle approaches. Many times it requires pulling into a homeowner's driveway to allow the oncoming vehicle to pass. There are 2 areas with blind bends in the road and one where it is virtually one lane. Add to this all of the people walking their dogs, jogging, cycling, and the numerous vehicles (some towing boats) heading to and from the State Park, it's just not safe. With proposed reduced speed limits on Feb. 24th's Council Meeting Agenda, I am wondering if Council will consider including dropping the speed limit to a maximum of 20mph along this stretch of Plesant Beach Dr. COBI is at risk by having an unsafe speed limit posted in this area. The State Park recognized the need for reduced speed on this road and has posted a 15mph speed limit once the road reaches its boundary. Thank you for your time and consideration. Pursuant to RCW 46.61.415 it is unlawful to post a speed limit below 20mph on a public street. 20mph speed limits are generally reserved for school zones. Posting 20mph speed limits at locations other than school zones may have the unintended consequence of desensitizing drivers to school zone speed limits.
To review the concerns raised in your message an engineer from Public Works will visit this location to observe the existing signs and road conditions. At some island locations the city has posted supplemental signs. Recently at Wing Point Way we posted signs warning drivers of the narrow roadway and pedestrians that was generally well received.

Yes, let's get this fixed.
We live on Pleasant Beach close to the Oddfellows intersection. There are no speed limit signs between Oddfellows and West Blakely along Pleasant Beach. This is a road that is so narrow, the city doesn't paint road surface markings. I'm not suggesting the city should paint it - no need for any more spending these days. But I would guess a public road this narrow probably can't be painted (?), and for safety reasons is justified in posting the slowest speed possible (according to Bill, 20mph, even though the State Park posts 15mph).
I'd like to suggest any new sign you add on Pleasant Beach is placed shortly after Oddfellows visible for drivers heading east towards Fort Ward. This is where drivers are peeling off from the wider, painted portion of Pleasant Beach Dr at higher speeds.
If we can't reduce the speed, please consider some sign to the effect of "Road Narrows/Poor Visibility/Chill Out." Our neighbor's dog was killed last June at this exact spot from an driver barreling east off the arterial portion of Pleasant Beach.
