Our Public Works Department current has a bid out for comprehensive repairs to the pavers along the length of Fayetteville Street. This project should be under way later in the summer or early in the fall. It takes a lot more than a bag of sand and a broom. There were some design issues with the paver placement and also issues with the actual construction on a couple of blocks, particularly the PNC Building area.

I hope something actually gets done. There have been numerous promises of "it will be fixed soon" for years. these bricks have been wobbly since at least 2008. I myself have reported them once a year and nothing ever gets done. This report should stay as "open" or "in process" until its fixed instead of just closing it like it has been done the last 3 times it has been reported.

I'll leave this one open until at least the contract is let, so I can provide an update on the project schedule. I looked back and we only had one SCF issue (Jan. 2012) opened on this issue since we started tracking SCF inquiries in Jan 2011. Our Parks staff does constantly re-set pavers along the street, but in certain places (like PNC) the original construction was improperly completed. We generally will not close an issue on SCF until a work order has been issued for the crew to do a job. In the January situation we did issue a work order and our crew did complete some work on the pavers, but clearly they were unable to solve the entire problem so we budgeted for a more comprehensive project...which is the one out for bid now. I'll post an update when I have more info.

I hope you are holding the original companies liable so that taxpayers are not paying for this work again and again.

Some of this on the newer portions may be warranty work, but a lot of it is related to the success of the street in drawing a lot of activity, wear and tear, combined with some design understanding that we learned along the way. The bids on this project should be going out next week.

We have contracted with Fred Adams Paving to repair the 26 locations reported to the Parks Dept. They will begin in the 100 block of Fayetteville Street at 8:00am on Monday (8-13-12).

I assume you get rated on how fast you respond to new items and also how fast they get completed but don't you think its a little hasty to close this before the work begins? There are a bunch of reasons that not only can the work not get done or be delayed but also not be done correctly. Can't we wait until the work is completed and verified before we close this ticket?

We field thousands of these issues each year. Our policy has been that when a work order is issued, or a citation is filed by an inspector we have taken an action that will in 100% of the cases result in the completion of the work, so we generally give citizens a reasonable idea when the work will be completed and close the SCF issue to reduce the number of times our field staff has to circle back to update this software. This helps us be more efficient about using it, thus keeping everyone's tax rate low (Raleigh has the lowest total cost of municipal services in the Triangle and State). Most people simply want to alert us to a problem, and get confirmation that we are on it and will fix it within a reasonable time, so this works pretty well. We get rated not on how fast we respond but how well. Our field staff's track record on this is outstanding. I don't think you have too much to worry about that the project won't get completed or done correctly. But...I will leave it open and ask the Public Works staff to confirm when the contract is complete.
