There have been a few break-ins on Dwight Street lately, between Chapel and Edgewood. One friend had a bicycle stolen from a locked garage behind his house (lock was smashed off the door). Another woke up to find someone pushed up the bars on the window, cut open the screen and stole a bag (with wallet, cash, etc), a laptop and a tablet out of their bed while they were sleeping. I know for certain in at least one of these cases the NHPD were notified and a report was filed.
Obviously, it is important to notify the police ASAP in cases like this, but documenting it publicly and keeping neighbors informed is important too. Has anyone else heard of/experienced this in this neighborhood lately?

A little preventive thought goes a long way. Crimes in Dwight are generally property crimes of opportunity....not premeditated burglaries. Storing valuables in plain sight near a window is probably not a good idea in the first place, but your best bet is to consult with your landlord about appropriate window hardware. I've lived in this neighborhood over 30 years and the only times I've had a theft in my house or in my rental properties is when a door or window was left open or something valuable was left in plain sight near a window or in a car. Don't provide an opportunity.

You're right about the address Sven, I misspoke and apologize for any confusion. The homes affected have been between Edgewood and Chapel on Dwight.
While it is great that your properties are in good shape, and I agree that it is best to do what you can to prevent crime, I think it's foolish to assume that ANYONE is immune to something like this happening to them. Or assume that everyones landlord will take the same precautions you have to prevent a burglary. A person broke into a home down the street from you and robbed a tenant of belongings on their bed while they were sleeping in it. What if the tenant woke up? What if they were harmed or worse? What if this wasn't a "crime of opportunity" (I mean, seriously who considers stealing things from right next to a sleeping person who might at any moment wake up and catch them an opportunistic time to swipe a laptop?). While you may have lived in the neighborhood for 30 years, times change and isn't it better to be kept in the loop about what's happening here?

I beg your pardon. I didn't mean to belittle your experience. You were certainly subjected to a very dangerous and frightening circumstance and you are justifiably upset. I hope you gave a full account to the police. Of course your warning to the neighborhood is very much in order. I thank you for that.
My apparent callousness may be the result of my 30 years here. The Dwight neighborhood was once a very high crime area. Incidents such as you describe were routine in the late eighties and early nineties. Tenants vacated and left absentee landlords holding the notes on properties they thought they'd flip for easy profits. Then the landlords walked away and half the houses in the area were abandoned and boarded up. It took twenty years and a lot of work to bring back the neighborhood. I guess I'm still in "preventive" mode. I hope the rest of your residency here is much more pleasant!

More developments in regards to the burglary I posted about yesterday (on Dwight between George and Chapel). Police were called after the initial incident and a report was taken. The burglar had taken many things including her car keys. The burglar then returned to the residence and stole the tenant's car at around 12:30 am. Tenant dialed 911 and was on the phone with dispatch as the thief was pulling out of her driveway. Police never arrived.
I think it's pretty obvious that the police aren't patrolling this neighborhood enough and criminals are taking notice.
I feel as if a HOME INVASION and a CAR THEFT deserve justice. As someone who recently had their home invaded on Dwight I was made to feel like it wasn't really a priority.
40 so far this summer is what the police officers said to my friend yesterday morning so maybe it has been longer than two months.
