Description

Fire Hydrants. Murray Hill Park. Murray Hill Road. What is going on with them. Meaning that if we have a fire one fire hydrant is painted black and the other one is painted red. Meaning that if we have a fire we have fire hydrants that are marked worthless to the fireman and our home that could be on fire. This has been brought to engineering's attention multiple times along with Johns attention multiple times over a period of 2 years. Not to mention that we have been living here with fire hydrants that have been giving us a false sense of security. We know the status. What are you doing about it and why has this been going on so long. All concerns are well documented. We don't feel safe. I understand the fire hydrants near Malden Hospital also have there own problems. Time is of the essence when there us a fire. We don't have that level if security. Please fix this.

I am not sure I understand the concern. What are they supposed to look like and do the colors have any meaning? I always thought fire hydrants are easy to spot and it is nice to see some of them in different colors or even creatively painted as long as they are not rusty.

Leo, the concern is that hydrant is inoperable. The various colors you see on malden fire hydrants indicate The flow rate. You can Google NFPA 291to learn more. Basically Green is good.. yellow orange is so so...and black means dead. Its not decreative, it tells firefighters whether to even bother wasting precious minutes if there's a fire... Now supposedly there's plans to pump water from near by hydrants when cases like dead hydrants arrise, but the other near by hydrants have low flow rates and murray hill park is well a tall hill off murray hill road, another hill...another concern would be knowing if theres adequate pressure to pump all that water uphill in a moments notice.

I still cant believe there's seems to be some acceptable level of inoperable hydrants that are allowed to linger for years in malden...not days..

Leo. I am glad you asked that question. Fire hydrants are painted different colors, so firefighters have a visual in regards to the fire hydrants working to its potenial in case there is a fire at your dwelling. Blue is excellent. Green is good. Yellow is fair. RED and Especially BLACK are warnings to the firefighters not to waste their time on that black fire hydrant, because the water pressure, if there is any at all, is not high enough to put out a fire. For Instance. Murray Hill Park has one fire hydrant at the top of the hill. Painted BLACK. A fire occurs and the firefighters ignore that fire hydrant and look for the next closest fire hydrant. The next closest fire hydrant is on Murray Hill Road at the bottom of Murray Hill Park. That fire hydrant is painted RED. Again. The firefighters will ignore that fire hydrant due to the color code RED. AGAIN. The firefighters will look for an alternate fire hydrant The closest fire hydrant is on Hospital Road near Malden Hospital. There is a fire hydrant painted YELLOW. Still not a good choice. But considering that is the only fire hydrant, it is all they have to work with. Now they have to hook it up and drag the hoses up a very step hill and hope for the best. That is unacceptable. Precious time is valuable time to save lives. This Black nonfunctioning fire hydrant on Murray Hill Park was installed 15 years ago when we received a new street and new water pipes. We have been living with a false sense of security for 15 years. I have been dealing with Engineering and John from the water department for over 2 years now. We have a lot of anxiety and do not feel safe. We are not safe. I have been in contact with the fire department. They told me there is a plan in effect documented in their computer to take the water from Hospital Road.That is the best they can do until this serious problem is resolved. Seriously. I was also told that there was an exact senerio about 10 years ago in Malden, that a house burnt to the ground because they also had nonfunctioning fire hydrants. No pressure. No Water. The firemen were helpless and they could only look at each other in disbelief while the house was burning to the ground. A house fire. Firemen arrive. Nonfunctioning firehydrants. Devasting family. Problem was then fixed ASAP. They are safe now. We are living on Murray Hill Park with a disaster waiting to happen.

It has been 2 years since the original request. We are not safe with this black fire hydrant. Black equals no water to the fire department if they need to come for a fire. Please update when this will be addressed.

What is it that makes the hydrant bad, the small black cover? If so, we just had a brand new hydrant installed on our street (never had one before, so this is the only one) and it looks just like the one pictured with the black cover. Does this mean our one and only brand new hydrant is not functional?

Yes cap color indicates flow rate. Black cap means no flow... So it's not working.

This is an issue affecting the entire city of Malden, and apparently for a long time. I have asked several city representatives including Bob Knox, Yem Lip and Kevin Halpin - via this forum and other means - if there is a fire safety risk due to low water pressure across the city, and if so how this can be addressed. If money is the issue, then let's work together and find the needed funds.

To date I have not received a response from anyone. This silence speaks volumes.

Bob, Yem, Kevin, Mayor Christenson and others reading this forum: please do not let our houses burn down due to ongoing inaction addressing a known problem. How would you feel if a non-working fire hydrant was located directly outside your own home?

Fire Hydrant Was Removed And Swapped To Another Fire Hydrant. The Status Of The Swapped Fire Hydrant Remains The Same.
Malden Fire Department Recognized It and Confirmed It's a NONFUNCTIONAL Fire Hydrant. Therefore, AGAIN, The Fire Deputy Painted It Black.
