The Public Works Dept. has decided not to place salt barrels in certain locations this year. They are still available at all public buildings as well as at the DPW facility on Neil Street.
We have actually been watching the barrels for the past several years and recording their usage. By that, we mean how often our crews need to add sand to them. What we have found is that most barrels are not being used with enough frequency to warrant their placement. Additionally, we have observed that after the first couple of storms, they get buried by the snow and go unused until the spring thaw.
It was decided this year that the availability to the public of sand/salt at the DPW facility on Neil Street should be sufficient. Residents are allowed to fill 5 gallon containers to have on hand as needed throughout the winter. Additionally, residents can call our offices to request that abnormally slippery locations be spot sanded as needed. You can call our offices during business hours, or the Police Dept. after hours, who will in turn contact our on-call personnel.
I am going to close this issue for now. We encourage all of those parties interested to utilize the available sand/salt mix at the DPW facility to have on hand as needed this winter.
