The bridge was built in 1984 for $379, 400. It was required by Federal Law because it dissected Ethan Allen Park and Homestead. The bridge was looked at to be moved in the early 1990's for the Burlington Bike Path, but it was too costly. Setting access from the west would require various property acquisition and easements, however the engineering required and cost of construction has been the limiting factor in prioritizing the project. It does remain on the radar for improving access to the New North End as well as on the City's capital plan.

The bridge is currently not able to be moved or opened due to federal and capital limitations. The concept of re-use is being explored for additional east-west bike connections in future phases of improvements.
