Description
The house on the corner of Ashby Ave and King St (northeast side) has some plants abutting the sidewalk along their property. Unfortunately a couple of these plants close to the corner have long spikes, and pedestrians walking along the north side of Ashby Ave and the east side of King St here are regularly poked and scratched. Ideally these plants should be removed entirely, or at least cut back considerably as to not create a danger to passers-by.

Parks staff made an on-site inspection this morning. It was confirmed that the spiky plants are Agave, “Century plant” with spine at each tip. Staff made the sidewalk safe by pruning off the thorny tips that posed an immediate danger. Staff will send the property owner a notice today and will recommend the owner replace the plants with ones more appropriate for the location. Staff abated the immediate danger gone and allowing our standard two weeks to comply. If they do not comply, staff will continue follow up to ensure compliance.
If necessary, the resident can contact parks staff directly at 981-6660 if they would like to inquire about the status of this in two weeks or report another encroachment there or anywhere in the city.
Thank you for contacting our office and please do in the future with questions/concerns.
