We contacted COAST UNITED ADVERTISING and have determined these benches do not belong to them. They belong to the City of Oakland; this issue needs to be addressed by the City of Oakland PWA.
If that's the case, the graffiti-tagged bench at the corner of Broadway and 40th would also be the responsibility of PWA (which has actually been doing a pretty good job on small jobs like replacing graffiti-covered signs).
The Keep Temescal Clean & Beautiful volunteers were out here today picking up litter and trying to do the best we can to make this area unsightly. Please help us by resolving this issue.
Had the same situation with the bench at 2865 Broadway. PWA said Coast United was maintaining the bench. I contacted Coast United and they said, nope, it is the city's bench, not theirs. PWA, the ball is back in your court. Please fix these benches.
POLICY 6: CREATE SAFE, FUNCTIONAL AND LEGAL BUS STOPS WITH NEEDED AMENITIES
Best Practice 6.1: Make bus stops long enough for the buses that will use them
Best Practice 6.2: Paint the curb at bus stops red
Best Practice 6.3: Assure that sidewalks are wide enough and clear enough for bus stops
Best Practice 6.4: Provide an ADA compliant bus boarding/alighting area of at least 8 feet by 5 feet Best Practice 6.5: Provide bus shelters with appropriate amenities
On bus shelters: Refers to a shelter for riders to wait for the bus, a 13′x4′ canopy area with bench seating for three people. In addition, the shelter includes a display case with bus information for AC riders and a trash receptacle. Revenue from advertising in some of the shelters allows the vendor to fabricate, install, and maintain the bus shelters at no cost to AC Transit or other Participating Entities. This program started at AC Transit in 1999 and the first bus shelter was installed August 2000.
