Description
Jake brakes are prohibited in the Boro ! Slow down truckers and ya won't need to use your jake brakes or retarders coming down the hill on 100 south. Pottstown Boro needs to enforce their ordinance or build sound barriers along 100 to muffle the excessive traffic and braking noise! Nothing is more annoying than enjoying peaceful time in your backyard while having to pause and listen to some disgruntled trucker shift down 10 gears with full retard and illegal exhaust echoing across the Manatawny and shaking my windows. Have some respect truckers for the locals!

PennDOT won’t ban ‘jake brakes’ on Route 100 hill
POTTSTOWN — The Route 100 hill between State Street and Shoemaker Road is too steep in places to ban southbound trucks from using the over-loud “jake brakes” for slowing down as they approach the traffic light.
Pottstown began looking into a potential ban when Councilman Jeff Chomnuk received a query in early December from a resident of Upland Street. The resident said trucks use jake brakes when coming down the hill and, with the leaves off the trees, the sound can be quite penetrating, Chomnuk said.Borough Council agreed to Chomnuk’s request and asked PennDOT to conduct a study. Pottstown Borough Manager Jason Bobst explained that PennDOT looks at three criteria when determining whether to put limits on heavy trucks. They are crash data, grade and speed limit. When the study was completed, it found that only three “reportable” crashes involving heavy trucks occurred on that stretch of road between 2006 and 2010. Also, the grade of the road exceeds 4 percent for 1,900 feet. That, combined with the fact that the trucks are allowed to drive at 55 miles per hour, means PennDOT wants to allow them as many ways as possible to slow down. As a result, because Route 100 is a state road, PennDOT will not be limiting the use of jake brakes on that section of road, said Bobst.
