Thank you for submitting this issue. As background information, Newport News does not run a fixed time traffic signal system except in the downtown area. The remainder of the City is broken into various signal systems. Each single in a system has a computer controller that runs different light sequences based on time of day, day of week, time of year and reacts to traffic demand. In each system, all signals are linked to provide as much coordination between the signals to optimize the heaviest traffic movements.
Staff is continuously monitoring these systems and modifying the systems and individual signals to provide the optimum coordination and movement of traffic on all approaches. However, there are several factors that could contribute to what you may be experiencing. Coordination in the direction of the heaviest flow traffic is given a higher priority over the opposing direction (typically during the morning rush hour the signals favor southbound traffic and that is reversed for the afternoon rush hour). Coordination along side streets is given a lesser priority the coordination along the major arterials. Critical signals in the City can detect the approach of an Ambulance or Fire Truck (when lights and sirens are activated). When that vehicle is detected it will change the signal to allow traffic to leave the intersection and the emergency vehicle to get through the intersection unimpeded.
So with all these variables it is not possible for the City to respond to your concern as stated. If you would like to discuss a specific intersection or series of signals please contact Mr. Cooper with the Department of Engineering at 926-8611 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday so that we can fully investigate your concern.

Sounds like to me you are all a bunch of complaniers. The inital post was City wide. The city tried to give you information and then you complain about specifics. If you give them specifics first then maby the can address your concerns.
I go through Jefferson and Oyster Point intersection all the time. It has three straight lanes for both ways on jefferson three striaght lanes heading to the interstate two lanes heading to Warwick, which is understandable since the bridge only carries two lanes. There is 2 left turns lanes for every direction and right turn lanes for every direction. There is a lot of traffic going though this intersection. A lot of traffic. To me the problem is like tring to poor five gallons of water through a funnel. It just takes that much time to get it through. If you are that concerned then remove your car from the flow and take the bus or move back to your big city. It will help us all out. Like everybody else I am sure those City guys have way more work then they have people and really do the best they can. But nobody gives them any thanks for the problems they are working on. So far all I see is the bad mouthing so called "citizens" do on this site. Get proactive and help to find solutions to the traffic - oh no can't do that, that would take away time from fussing about it.
