There is plenty of room for people to pass--a wheelchair can easily pass through. But strict adherence to code (8' overhead clearance across the full 4' of sidewalk) effectively requires its removal. The original complaint might have been addressed with a good pruning, which has now been done, but the city is insisting on full compliance. It's a terrible pity, and I hope others will also ask the city to reconsider this inflexible position.
It looks like they put in bricks to let people walk by further to the right. Perhaps they could measure the sidewalk from the edge of the bricks to a distance from the left edge of the sidewalk equal to the width of the bricks.
It's a beautiful vine and it should be allowed to remain. The city needs to stop being so standardized in its approach to every single block's vegetation, or the unique features of Ann Arbor get ruined.
a code violation notice was issued by the community standards unit of the ann arbor police and upon the follow up inspection on 6/20/2016 the property was in compliance.
