As a resident who would have that light throwing it reflection into my living room, the blinking would be a nuisance

(Hit enter too soon. Sorry). The steady green light has caused no issues thus far. I literally am sitting out front on my stairs as I type this and see zero issues with it. The stop 50 feet down the street for people coming from peabody and school street are fine. School street traffic does have little time to see it when turning anyway. It's used primarily I believe for crossing to store. I say leave it.

Seems youve got an oppinion without see the facts The light at SCHOOL st is not in reach There is another crosswalk just past the corner store there and two parking lot entrance/exits where cars are almost broadsided the pedestrains and their dogs have almost been hit at high traffic times (rush hour, night time) and the photo doesnt show an intersection behind the light where drivers probably ticketed for not aware there is stop sign due to NO warning signe and due to GREEN light there is multiple near miss since doesnt follow uniform standards that other traffic lights in our area do follow by design. We are at risk YOU are NOT obviously. the city MAY do something BUT after enough people are hit (is what im hearing) and i dont want to be one of those people.

That light being always green is a problem. It should be shut off It would serve to help pedestrians better. I know that area and was almost hit there in crosswalks with an elderly person when on School where there is no light in reach. There is no other light farther up Tremont to cross over to that side where light is also. I help an elderly person near that intersection. He likes to walk (therapy) and goes to that store on the corner. It is ugly to have a light blinking or shining in our windows. Why is there a light needed there that directs traffic though. That makes no sense. What is the reason for it always on anyway? Its such a long wait for needed pedestrian light in any area. Why is this one used adversely.

In reading these comments, I see we all have our own agendas. But some of us are younger and can even run across if necessary. But this area has people who are handi-cap and some other elderly people as well. There is also kids at that store for candy. It is ridiculous to have an unneccessary green light causing confusion. Statistic prove drivers speed up when seeing green. Ive been helping an elderly person in this neighborhood for couple years and didnt notice that its the light causing the driers to speed up. I thought people are getting worse at driving but see now its due to this light issue.

We were almost hit too by a driver turning onto School Street at a fast rate of speed, while we were pulling out of parking lot there. We were heading toward Tremont with no one else around and out of no where a car was skidding at us. That driver didnt think we had right of way (us already on School), as there was a car at the stop sign where we were heading (to Peabody) My pregnant wife was in passenger seat and scared to death. I must agree that i now notice the green pedestrian lights but the others - always on green - are mid-block type scenarios. Like heading toward Kernwood bridge and i think...Beverly MA. These alway on pedestrians lights are not causing an issue like this multi-intersection - crosswalk area with a parking lot where cars (like us) in/out of parking lot have no access to that single light. I always wonder what would have happened if we were hit that night. It does seem that it is contradictive use of pedestrian light.

Seems to me is there is a bigger issue with the school street connection than the light?!
Btw when I searched the RMV regarding "flashing green lights" I found nothing!!!

Since there is no cross street, there seems to be no actual true use for a flashing light. I think there definately needs to be something at the mouth of Tremont and School where the stop sign is unaffective and take ing a left is dangerous for ANYONE in or out of the crosswalk area!!! Nobody seems to have the ability to see the "walk signal light" when the just rush out of school onto Tremont.
And for the person that felt I may not know the area...I reside at the top of School and Tremont. I use that crosswalk almost daily. I have sat in my front steps counting the cars that don't even stop on school street... And for the record, yet again... I was the person who pushed to get the lines repainted at that crosswalk!!!

I see that this issue was being closed without a solution?The fact that drivers being granted the right-of- way instead of being cautioned by yellow in is area is creating danger. I would think the city could've fixed this easy with a continuous (NOT blinking) yellow light. The light was put there for pedestrians not to direct traffic to GO - especially near so many crosswalks, 2 parking lot entrances not to mention another intersection (60ft away) at Grove St., with a STOP sign YET No warning sign posted on Tremont St. This Green light is a problem and this light is not accessible to us from the other side of Tremont or from School. Why would the city want to put us in danger? I would love a solution but what about an answer at least? I read the drivers manual and viewed the MUTCD also NO mention of this type of light at an intersection. Drivers passing through Salem via this route are the most dangerous since speeding up to make the light I have almost been his so many times over the years and getting to old to dash around cars.

Wow I am surprised the city still hasn't fixed this delema with the green light. I wonder if it's even legal to ticket anyone for going through the stop sign at Grove street since the close proximity. I know someone who got a ticket there and still paying a surcharge on it YET, I read in the drivers manual if you can't stop safely, just continue through the intersection - he did. The very fact that there's a pedestrian light there proves the necesity of it. They are not cheap. The fact that is green is a total contradiction to its purpose there. I dont believe its a state wide policy since so much variation everywhere else. Still I dont see it green at any other intersections.

Did this ever get a response? I cant see anything. I submitted it again since in good weather people seem to drive even faster.

Who is "Guest" and why is Guest concerned about closing this issues and why NO solution? What is Guests' concern without regard to a fix for this problem?

What would be a good solution to you? Do we remove the lights all together!? Do we add lights at schools?! (Seems the stop sign is ineffective anyway? Put an island at top of school street!? What is your solution? Please note for me...the flashing blue light shoots directly thru my house... The standard green solid doesn't effect me. A flashing one may. If so what is my recourse as I moved in and it wasn't an issue.

We cannot turn the light off and we cannot have a flashing yellow at a pedestrian crossing. The City would not meet the uniform traffic code for Massachusetts. Turning the green light off would give the impression the lights are not working. If you use a flashing yellow it would give the driver not enough time to respond from when the light changes from green to yellow and then red.It would be instant from yellow to red and in most cases people would be running the red light and in a lot of cases there would be screeching of tires when motorists try to comply. Please do not blame your councillor for this. Recommendation is for better signage and look at the speed limit on Tremont street. City Electrician John Giardi.

Thank you for your many details. I was told there is traffic signal lights going at that intersection in the future do you know anything about that? I see many other pedestrain lights with varied colors according to the traffic conditions and NO others are causing danger to pedestrians - ONLY this one, due to its close proximity to intersections and crosswalks and parking lot. Why not move it, since the area has outgrown its application, instead of justifying the danger caused to pedestrians. Who is responsible for the person who is hit by confused driver - You?

Hi Christine sorry about causing you distress in seeking a solution to the danger posed by that light. You will never be hit by a car you are on the right side of that street luckily. I dont think you should have any blinking lights in your windows. But i have been told there is a (future) BIG traffic light going at that intersection and those lights will definitly be a bigger problem. Property values will go down as well - too bad when It sounds like the placement of that light is the real issue, if it needs to be always on and green. Sorry that i just want to be safe as do others when crosssing Tremont Street I shouldnt have to be such a BIG problem for you or others. I didnt realize peoples safety was such an imposition. Its too bad that im not getting younger instead. Maybe must have a friend in city hall but it does make the city look really bad in how they are dealing with this issue. Enjoy the new light on their list (maybe a decade long) due to "Use-It-Or-Loose-It budget requirement someday - surprise vs when its actually needed i guess its just how the system works.
