small median strips would block left turns 24/7. That's overkill vs. posting "no left turn" for designated hours. Or how about try slowing down and be alert for stopped traffic.

Nodoby pays attention to those signs. I am one of the ones stopped behind the would be turner, watching people nearly slam into me in my rear view as they come over the crest and lock on the brakes. It would end left turn motions 24/7, but I think the time has come with traffic on Wade that that probably neeeds to happen for the overall betterment.

I agree, as a daily commuter using Wade Ave, there needs to be an analysis conducted.

I'm also a daily commuter using Wade, and I agree that this is a problem: not only the left-turns, but also the average speed on this road, compared to what conditions would dictate is safe.

The more the developers build, the more traffic we're going to have on Wade. There's been a sharp increase in traffic on this venue as well as side streets in the past couple of years. Better to take care of it now than pay out the wazoo in a lawsuit.

Lawsuit over what?? The left turn lanes at Dixie Tr and Brooks Ave are not able to hold more than half a dozen cars. If all left turns are sent to these intersections 24/7, then traffic will back up into the left thru lane. That will then lead to single lane in and out with a continuous left turn lane. Is that what you commuters who can't look forward to see a left turn want?

Concerned Citizen, please calm down. I meant no harm with that comment. I was simply pointing out that traffic is likely to increase, not decrease. On my street we have cars zooming through all times of day and night cutting from Wade to Lake Boone/Glenwood. My comment was a snarky commentary on the litigious society in which we live. To turn left on Dixie (north or south) I've noticed cars often pull into the intersection then wait for the light to turn red THEN turn. It's probably the only way many of them can get through, although it's illegal. For the record, I'm unemployed, so I don't count myself among the commuters. If you have a solution to make traffic safer or lighter, please come forward with it for consideration.

Mr. Donohue, I apologize if my comment seemed to lack respect. Given the current improvements that are underway, such as sidewalk additions, to Wade, and the narrowness of the road, it would seem unlikely that barriers would be installed to prevent left turns. Also, there might be a concern for emergency response personnel. That's what I've always been told when I ask about traffic calming measures in this section of Raleigh. However, I would like to offer a suggestion: What if protected left turn signals were installed at Dixie and Brooks? That might encourage motorists to use those lanes instead of turning left onto Dogwood, Duplin, etc.

The park at Wade and Oberlin often causes problems as well.

Jaycee Park is a right-hand turn for inbound Wade Ave.

All of Wade needs to be divided and either turned into an expressway, or something be done to make it more residential.

It IS residential. There are many homes from Faircloth to Glenwood with driveways onto Wade.

Aye Im not contesting that. Im saying that with that though, a lot of the cross streets have controlled access (exit ramps and the like). Either the city needs to put in major speed bumps, and close a lot of access off, making it not an expressway, or they probably need to buy up some of those houses, move their driveways, and make the whole area a controlled access road.

Very good discussion and Wade Avenue has been an issue for many years. Commenters are correct that installing a permanent median would help, however, this would be very difficult due to the narrow width of the road. That being stated, Wade is a State maintained road and improvements are addressed by the NCDOT. We are aware of the problem and will bring this to NCDOT for review. Closing this issue in SeeClickFix since NCDOT does not participate. Thanks everyone.

Id like to leave this issue open. Thanks for addressing it from a City of Raleigh standpoint. The purpose of this website is to track issues, regardless of owner. As the issue is not fixed, it should remain open. This will encourage people to take this up with DOT, and allow conversation and updates.

CoR, has the city looked into this any more at all? I understand its a DOT road, but this is a city problem to me.

I also back in October sent this to DoT, never heard anything from them. I will also follow up again with them.

City staff met with NCDOT to discuss this issue. In order to safely install any type of permanent solutions, the width of the road would need to be increased. This would ensure that safe enough width will exist for travel lanes. As a result, this would be a major project to increase the width of the road to install a median throughout the length of Wade Avenue.
