ABSOLUTELY! to add insult to injury to the Monroe from Essex, there are several large depressions which puddle and then...you guessed it...splash anyone unfortunate enough to be walking on the sidewalk. The splash is magnified by the excessive speed of the cars turning the corner.

There is no need to allow left turns from Essex onto Monroe. They should be prohibited. Traffic wishing to reach Federal can use Summer Street. The current arrangement encourages cut-through commuters onto Carpenter Street, another narrow road inappropriate for commuters.

I agree with Peter Crowley. It would be wonderful if left turns from Essex Street to Monroe Street were no longer allowed. Monroe Street is being used as a cut through street and some drivers are not looking out for children and elderly crossing the street to get to the library.

A traffic study on the number of cars going down Monroe and carpenter would be enlightening. I'll ask our ward councilor.

Monroe and Carpenter are public streets, but only members of the FSNA should be able to use them? I use Monroe/Federal/Carpenter after going to the library, hardly a 'commuter'. Maybe you'd like us all to pay a toll to drive through the Mcintyre district?

All neighborhoods would be safer if people were prohibited from parking so close to corners and crosswalks.

A traffic study could determine the number of cars on the streets would be aimed at finding out how to improve the infrastructure--best places to put stop signs that people actually stop at, best places to put crosswalks where cars can see pedestrians and pedestrians can see cars, best speed limit to ensure the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, etc. Then we can enforce those things for the safety of everyone. It's really unsafe. I agree, we need to prohibit people from parking on that corner for sure. It's really hard to see to cross the street safety, especially for tweens walking to the library on their own.

Chris, it isn't just the McIntyre district. There are cut-throughs in North Salem, South Salem, and everywhere else. It would be better to discourage cut-throughs and let the side streets be used for access to the neighborhoods. The main streets should be used by through traffic. That can be encouraged by better management of traffic lights and turn lanes. It can also be encouraged by restricting turns and configuring one-way streets.

We live in the Derby neighborhood, but our family visits the Salem Public Library weekly. I found this to be a safe forum to raise my concerns about the safety risks to pedestrians at this intersection. I hope that there can be a simple change to improve safety.

A 50 unit apartment bldg here, a 200 unit bldg there, turn Parker brothers into apts. No one was concerned since it wasn't in there neighborhood. Now you're seeing the effects but you can't go backwards. One ways and parking restrictions will only make the city less desireable. Look what it's done to downtown Lynn. Bump outs to make the crossing more obvious might help safety but until you're ready to curtail apt & condo growth in the region, and change the laws that allow developers to skirt zoning in other towns, the problem will only get worse. Many of us do have to commute out or through Salem to get to a good job. We can't all be museum and restaurant workers.

This morning, instead of pausing to let me cross with a toddler, a man in a pickup truck raised his index finger and accelerated his pick up truck. He took the right turn so wide and fast that he almost ran on to the opposite sidewalk. Please take a look at this intersection and add a sign or paint a crosswalk.
