Yes, a Boylan Heights resident put his own yard waste can at the Western Blvd pedestrian crosswalk since dog walkers were dropping their bags onto the ground at the stop light. I saw he just picked up the very full liner bag this weekend and put it into his own trash can.

This would be helpful in the Cameron Park neighborhood also! We have a neighbor who puts out a trash can for all of the Broughton HS students who park near her house.

I think some in-ground dog waste receptacles would be nice. I saw these in the historic squares of Savannah and thought they were the greatest things. They have a foot lever to open and they are visual non-invasive. A picture of a dog is on top. I tried to find a photo on-line to show but no luck.

We think this is a great idea, and would be particularly helpful to all of the dog owners/walkers in the neighborhood.

We are looking into this. As everyone can imagine there are costs involved with this. The purchasing of the equipment and maintenance would be considerable on a budget that is already tight on resources.

what are the costs? what is the distribution of public trash cans throughout the city? how are those locations determined?

I support the addition of public rubbish receptacles in Boylan Heights. They are sorely needed.

Public trashcans are only in place in the downtown central district and public places like bus stops and parks. The city does not have additional resources to place bins in neighborhoods at this time.
Per code, proper disposal of pet waste is the responsibility of the dog owner.

We have at least four bus stops in our neighborhood, not counting the TTA stop on Western Boulevard. I think one of them has a small trash receptacle attached to the sign post, and I'm not sure that one gets emptied regularly. Maybe putting larger cans at the bus stops at the corners of Boylan and Western Blvd. would alleviate some of this need as that is on the path of many walkers and bus riders.

this is true. As user Phil pointed out, the can by the Western and Boylan bus stop is not maintained by the city of Raleigh but by a citizen doing a good deed for his neighborhood. Similarly, a residential bin has been situated in Dupont Circle, but is not always upended, leaving mostly pet waste bags there for extended periods. There is a small bin attached to the stop on the south side of South st, but not on the north side and there is often trash on the ground by that stop. There used to be a bin on the stop on Morgan near Boylan, but it disappeared some time ago.
Of course proper disposal of pet waste is the responsibility of the dog owner, but you may have noticed not every dog owner observes this particular code. I may be willing to walk all over the place and take circuitous routes to find these out of the way disposal places, but clearly many dog owners are not. There are numerous bus stops in the neighborhood that could be excellent candidates for public trashcans.

Also this area has a bike route and greenway access. Also road races.

At this point (since this issue has been reopened), it sounds like we need to install trash cans at the existing City facilities (bust stops) as a start. Good point Misty!

Any further comments from City staff on this issue? As noted in the discussion above we have several bus stops as well as greenway access points bordering our neighborhood. There are often beverage and food containers strewn at these locations. Some of these get washed into storm drains and into Rocky Branch. Whom should we contact if we are interested in pursuing installation of city maintained trash receptacles?

In addition let's play the hypothetical here. We install and maintain trash containers in your neighborhood and it works great. What would stop every neighborhood in Raleigh who has similar litter issues from asking for the same service?
Bottom line is at this time there is not resources to provide this service in your neighborhood.

Sorry, but you didn't answer my question. And I would like to note that, as I said in my previous comment, we do have bus stops n our neighborhood. Whom would I need to contact in order to push this issue? I realize this has has a budgetary impact, but it seems that trash collection from public places such as bus stops and Greenways should be a basic City function. So yes, I imagine that if Boylan Heights were to get trash cans at these places, other neighborhoods would want them too. A perfectly reasonable expectation.
