I don't see how a sign could be offensive to anyone.. are people that bored?

When they're all over your neighborhood, it really gives it a different feel. It no longer feels like a community of homes, but starts to feel like a place people don't have to care about and invest in - it becomes commercial, and starts to feel like people are just passing through. For those of us who do care about and invest in our neighborhood, whether tenants or owners, it helps us all if people are encouraged to care. These signs don't do that.

Code Enforcement, can you give us an update on these? Are they allowed or not? Is there a plan for taking them down?

The short simple answer is that this type of sign is allowed while there are vacant units.

They are allowed. They can remain up until the unit is rented. The challenge remains for staff to find out when the rental agreement is executed. There is no time specified in the ordinance to say they must come down for a certain number of days or months before the next rental period.

Zoning ordinance reads as follows:

Real Estate Sale/Rental Sign. One temporary non-illuminated sign advertising the sale or rental of the premises or indicating that such premises have been sold or rented, provided the area of any such sign shall not exceed six (6) square feet and shall be removed within three (3) days after the rental agreement has been executed or title has been transferred.

These signs are up year round, however. They don't come ever come down. I have been watching over the last year to make sure that this is true. So does Bissonette properties get to just say, "Well we haven't rented" and keep them up for 12 months? Or does he get around it by saying June 1st, so as soon as the June 1st lease is executed he can just say he's renting for next year's June 1st?

Assuming standard trim dimensions, my on-screen measurement has this sign at approximately 23 1/2" X 47 1/2", or 7 3/4 sq. ft.--clearly out of compliance. Also, it strains credulity that any apartment in this city wouldn't be rented in short order, with the sign thus needing removal within the three-day interval. Bissonette properties aren't the only party in apparent violation of this section of the zoning ordinance--a number of over-size signs are in place in non-temporary fashion. Perhaps it's time for (a) summer intern(s) to attempt rental in these units and report occupancy status.

Code Enforcement, can you please confirm that the reason these signs are able to stay up year round is because of the wording "Now renting for next June"? Or are they allowed to stay up year round because you don't have the capacity to monitor when they are rented? (They are up year round).

The zoning ordinance will be updated soon to clarify new sign requirements and language regarding time limits for these types of situations along with other sign permit requirements.
