Boston has a policy of fining 200 dollars for driving thru a crosswalk with a pedestrian in it. Seems to be a great deterrent. Fines like this could make it a much more walkable city, and could also help offset some of the very high property taxes. Could also stop people from jaywalking, which I have found can be safer than risking crossing at an intersection crosswalk.

I cross the street over a dozen of times a day. I would say only 1/3 of the drivers stop. why do we pay for all these police and the mayor if they do not do their job?

Drivers who don't yield to pedestrians are BAD PEOPLE. It should be prosecuted, not "fixed". People who abuse animals are also likely to murder and rape humans. In the same way, if someone can't be bothered to politely allow a pedestrian to cross the street, they are probably screwing people over in many aspects of their lives. If it were up to me, these drivers would serve jail time for being SOB's.

I think the fine idea is a good one. Is that somethng that needs to come from the B of A? How does the city go about instituting a fine? I also wonder if we should ask Lt Howell to send the motorcycle cops over to East Rock and start handing out tickets for this.

This problem is not a local one but a regional one. I know that when I drive to NY or NJ, they do the same thing. Pedestrians have the right of way but these clods don't seem to acknowledge that.

Still nothing done. I was driving and stopped to let someone cross and was beeped at by the car behind me. I really hope that it doesn't come to someone being hit for this to change.

What is/are the law(s) about crossing with or against a signal? Many times I have come to a situation where I have a green light and there is a "Don't Walk" signal on the sign - yet pedestrians are still crossing the street.
While I agree there is a blatant disregard for traffic laws by drivers in New Haven - I believe it holds true for most travelers - regardless of their choice of transport. Many times I've come across pedestrians crossing in the middle of a block, jumping out in front of cars, bicyclists riding all over the place disobeying traffic signals, etc... If we're going to ticket drivers in sting operations, let's open this can up to ticket all people who break the law. A law is a law - and shouldn't discriminate against one type of citizen or another.

I agree clarkst. What especially annoys me is when pedestrians hit the button and then cross illegally. If you're to attempt it, don't hit the button. HOWEVER, drivers have a particular obligation to be respectful because they are operating deadly weapons. Pedestrians don't kill people, drivers kill people.

There is no light at Pearl and Orange. The law is that you must yield to pedestrians. End of story. If pedestrians are trying to cross in front of you and you don't have time to stop, you are driving too fast. Drive under the speed limit and you should have no issue stopping for pedestrians. Fines for speeding in residential areas need to be doubled and actually enforced.

This really needs to be looked into. Just this morning, a friend and I were crossing, had gotten to the yellow line dividing the lanes, and a guy passed us with his middle finger stuck out the window. I really think that we should start taking pictures of the people who do not stop and sending them to both the police and WTNH. A friend used to do that in another neighborhood here and got results by doing so.

This is STILL an issue! This intersection desperately needs a stop sign. It is extremely dangerous.

I absolutely agree with this. At the very least, there should be flashing signals that pedestrians can press to make themselves more visible to vehicles. This issue was raised almost 5 years ago! It should definitely be fixed.
