Just sent the funeral home an email to ask if the fence belongs to them. Sent them the link to the issue as well, so if it does belong to them, hopefully they will respond here directly.
Good afternoon. This is Bill Lincoln President of the Board of Directors of the Westville Cemetery Association. I am also the owner of the Hawley Lincoln Funeral Home. The funeral home does not own the cemetery, rather it is owned by the individual lot owners and run by a volunteer board.
The funds of the cemetery are very limited but we have engaged someone to remove the damaged section next week. This type of damage occurs too frequently and repairs are made when monies become available. We are not insured against this type of damage nor are the individuals who cause this.
Again, I expect this to be completed to the neighbors satisfaction by next week along with some other repairs to be made within the cemetery.
With all best wishes, Bill Lincoln,
President
The Westville Cemetery Association
I hate to be the skunk in this conversation but why doesn't the cemetery association collect sufficient funds to adequately maintain the grounds and replace the fence? On a related note there is constant litter and trash around the perimeter. I have often wondered why the ground crew which does a nice job of maintaining the area within the fence couldn't spend a bit more time cleaning up the tree line on Blake, Osborne and Whalley.
If one of my relatives were buried there I would be appalled.
In reply to the comment about collecting additional revenue. There are no longer any funds to collect. The Westville Cemetery is not unlike certain other historical cemeteries that now longer have an on going revenue stream. Cemeteries depend financially on 3 things-sale of burial plots, grave openings and endowment derived from perpetual care. Westville has only a modest endowment derived from prudent investments many years ago. There are no more plots for sale. The income allows us only to do the very minimum. Our focus in the past few years has been repairs to the Whalley Ave. fence and ongoing repairs to monuments/headstones caused by neighborhood vandals.
I believe we can do a better job of cleaning up the area outside the fence. We certainly wish to be good neighbors and need to protect this historical treasure.
