A compression release engine brake, frequently called a Jake brake or Jacobs brake, is an engine braking mechanism installed on some diesel engines. When activated, it opens exhaust valves in the cylinders after the compression cycle, releasing the compressed air trapped in the cylinders, and slowing the vehicle.

Tom, I've lived here for 40 years, before I95 was even built. There are no major hills in this area that require the use of the jake brake. A few simple signs would go a long way to help with the noise in this area. It's that simple.

I swear it starts with the same truck at 4:15AM every day. It is OBNOXIOUSLY loud and there is no way in hell his mufflers are legal on that truck, which is another issue. But seriously, there are no major hills here. These greedy trucking companies need to obey the law, I'm sure even without a sign prohibiting the use of brake retarders this thing is well above the legal sound emitting limits with his mufflers the way they are. Something seriously needs to be done about this because the quality of life is suffering. People can't even sleep with their windows open for fresh air, and even closed it shakes the entire house and wakes everyone up. This has to change.

Try stopping a 66,000 gross weight truck, from hwy speeds without a jake brake. Without it, get used to the sound of crashing.

If you can't slow from 55 to 50 for that MILD curve, then you are breaking the law and going way too fast and already are at risk of crashing. Your logic is flawed and jake brakes only slightly reduce wear,they don't replace the main braking system.

A few simple signs would make a huge difference here.. I agree with the OP.. The noise level is out of hand and is detrinental to health and sleep quality. There are no major hills here requiring the use of the engine brakes around here.

The problem is the Blue Route on ramp from i95.. The "sound barrier walls" do not go nearly high enough. And there is no way those jake brakes are legal on 75% of the trucks. They take the muffler off on purpose so they can annoy traffic. They need to put signs up to prohibit their usage, as they do in MANY other communities. If they traveled at a safe normal speed, there would be no reason to apply the brakes anywhere near this area. There are no hills. So that right there tells me they are going too fast to begin with. Raise the walls and put signs up.. The signs are a cheap fix and would go a long way.

They don't care because the only people affected are the low income Derwood park residents. Only places like Ridley Park (Or anywhere people have a higher income, or where the Political figures live) will get a new sound wall put up. All they need here is a few signs that say "Brake Retarders Prohibited after 10pm" They do this in other towns all over the country, why can't they do it here? It's brutal and ridiculously loud. Most truckers illegally modify them just to make more noise, so they can scare the car drivers on the road. Just do a youtube search and you will see what I mean.. They are proud of waking people up since they hate working all night. Also they need to raise the sound wall for the ramp headed from 95 to 476 (It goes in the northwest direction). You can clearly see the trucks driving by from any one of the houses along Crum Creek Drive. That's why the sound is so bad.. the walls don't even go high enough. So raise the walls, and ban the use of Jake Brakes after 10pm at least, if not always. There is no need for jake brakes there because they were already going at a safe speed (They usually don't), there will be no need for hard braking.
