I agree. If the road is too narrow in some places, another option is to place sharrows on one side, and a protected bike lane on the other, similar to what was done with Humphrey Street. This could be done immediately. In the longer term, a separated cycle track can be planned for the side of the street that does not have an on-road facility. I would think that a protected bike lane would fit on the north/east side of Fitch, for commuters coming from Whalley Avenue and heading towards SCSU.

The road is being re-surfaced right now. Any word on a bike path?

They just repaved and re-striped. No bike path. Feel free to close the issue because it ain't going to happen.

Please direct your issue to the City of New Haven. SCSU does not have control of the city streets that run through the university.

Fitch Street here is a State road, so not under the direct authority of the City (so we can't take credit for paving it, either). We can and do work with the State on design issues, though. Right now we're focused on the nearby section of Whalley and making it safer and more bicycle friendly (big thanks to Rep. Pat Dillon for her work on this!). We can turn our attention to this section as a logical next step.

Thanks Rob. In driving to work this morning and looking at this again, I will say that it is just nice to have the white line between the lane and the curb. It gets really tight between the white line and curb in places, but the line does serve the purpose of keeping cars off the curb while leaving bike riders some room

This issue should remain open until Class A bicycle infrastructure is provided. The State and City need to work together on lobbying for it.

It would be great if the top administrators at SCSU would also recognize how important this issue is to their students, many of whom commute from the areas just south of campus. Maybe the University President can call for a meeting with ConnDOT about this concern?
