For several years, this has been reported to Councilmember Cheh who has oversight over DDOOT/Urban Forestry and Councilmember Allen who is also a fan of trees, and Case Trees. The problem is that since diagonal parking was implemented on this street and on the 6th St side of the Kennedy Rec Center, the cars are destroying the trees. The politics of parking has trumped saving our local tree canopy and having a healthy environment.
Maybe they could come up with an alternative? Surely someone in forestry has expertise in solving this? With global warming causing such hot summers here in DC, maybe tall grasses? Some get tall with tassels & have a lot of movement in the breeze. They don't require a lot of water after established and wouldn't get knocked down from parking. I agree that there is not much attention to the green canopy in Shaw; new & renovated houses in our neighborhood are covering entire backyard green spaces with concrete parking pads. There are no laws to protect green space on residential lots, thus causing too much water run-off.
