Description
Wayland Height sewer project was recently completed. We first need to tell you that they did an excellent job. However they never readded the pavement lines/ stop lines at the intersection of Peachtree/Gordon/Ashland. This is really important before school starts as people are cutting through Peachtree at high speeds after dropping their kids off at Daniels middle school. That is a 3 way intersection (with a condo entrance there as well) and very dangerous. It becomes a real terror in the morning and at pickup times after school. also the sign coming down Ashland, is hidden in the tree limbs. thank you

Agreed, these are important street markings especially with the school-related traffic we will see in coming weeks.
Also, before the street markings are repainted... please note that drivers headed up Peachtree toward the intersection with Gordon cannot see vehicles coming up Gordon if they stop where the Stop sign is physically located. They have to pull forward, past the sign, to see if a car is coming up Gordon.
Previously, (prior to the utility work), after commenters noted this problem, the pavement marking had been adjusted to indicate to those drivers that they should pull forward, past the actual Stop sign.
Markings at the intersection of Gordon and Ashland were also modified to clarify this messy, dangerous intersection.
Please have your traffic engineers re-examine this area and give us the clearest markings possible, to alleviate driver confusion and increase safety.
Thanks!

Also, The sign showing an intersection approaching as you are going down the hill from Oberlin toward Gordon, is hidden by trees. We are being nit picky but everyday we are waiting for some catastrophic event that could have been avoided. Please reopen and redirect this however necessary to help us make this safer for kids/families in our neighborhood and the ones going to school at Daniels too!

I would ask that no parking signs or yellow curbs be put on the corner/hill turning off oberlin onto ashland. Not the whole thing but Something at that corner to make it clear/ illegal for cars to stop there and drop children for school. Thanks for continuing to help our neighborhood!

PeachtreeMom, from what I understand it is up to us as a neighborhood to petition the city to restrict parking. I looked into this a while back and got this name as the contact person regarding parking petitions: Sherry Beville, 919-996-4047 or sherry.beville@raleighnc.gov
As you have noted, restricting parking on one side of the street should ensure that there are always at least 2 lanes open on that part of Ashland. My suggestion would be to petition for the parking restriction on the right side of Ashland (as you face Oberlin), since the people on that side live in the condos and don't generally park on the street anyway.

Neighbors...as posted last night on Wayland Heights fb, I have a strategic contact available to us now. Needing help, plz, to present--write concisely--our concerts with the facts.
PeachtreeMom, Annetta Hoggard, 'Neighbor', RaleighWaylandHeights, Wayland Neighbor and 'Neighbor-2800' (this is me!)--we all have commented on the Ashland-Oberlin safety issues.
Would you please be in touch with me: leave a msg with your phone # on my cell? 919-630-5558 OR text me? At this point I choose not to include my landline since this is a public posting. I check cell voice & text messages...in contrast to answering it directly.
Hope to hear from you soon! Like today, tomorrow...now. So we can move forward on this real concern of ours. Thanks much. Betty Stoddard
PS: Health issues mean (as noted on WHts fb post) that I'm limited in what I can do---so I really, really need YOUR HELPS! More thanks...

I do think that above all, we need sidewalks throughout the neighborhood. Currently there are 8-9 brand new homes or lots IN A ROW (one in process of being torn down) on the block of Gordon and Ashland.
Is it possible for the city to require this new construction to include sidewalks?
This was a requirement for all new townhomes that were built in our neighborhood both on Ashland/Oberlin as well as those on Oberlin (directly adjacent to Daniels). Currently that new constuction are the only sidewalks in the entire neighborhood.
If all of the new homes or lots being built as we speak were required to build sidewalks, that would be approximately 1/4 of our neighborhood and would resolve one of the most dangerous intersections (not just in our neighborhood but in the city) being made safer for pedestrians/families/kids walking to Daniels.
My property is on Peachtree and backs up to Gordon and my fence would need to be taken down, but I am 100% willing to do that. I think it would also enhance our property values if our streets were safer.
thank you

This issue isn't resolved and until there is real permanent action taken. We will keep opening tickets until there is some additional safety added to this intersection.
We all know that it is only a matter of time before a horrible incident occurs at this intersection but it won't be from lack of trying. At least we will have documentation to the fact that nothing has been done after multiple issues reported to the city of Raleigh.
To date we have still NOT heard the results of the Intersection study mentioned on 12-12-2016
Options to be looked at as possible solutions:
1) Close off one of the 4 streets that intersect here. Peachtree/Gordon/Both directions of Ashland
2) Close off Peachtree to Ashland and keep Peachtree and Gordon connected
3) Add a stop sign at ALL streets versus Only on Peachtree and Gordon
4) Add sidewalks throughout per the previous comment on 12-13-2016

They didn't even slow down, because there is nothing there to slow them coming down that hill.
We jumped up on the curb. We weren't in the intersection, but it was enough to scare me to death. Something has to be done to slow traffic from flying though this intersection.

PeachTree Mom I agree that this intersection is still not as safe as it could be, and I think you have hit on a simple suggestion that could make it much safer.
You are right that one of the biggest problems here is vehicles exiting Oberlin onto Ashland. They often come down the Ashland hill and enter the intersection of Peachtree and Gordon way too fast, especially considering that they can't see what is in the intersection until they are in it.
(Their visibility is obstructed by the huge and beautiful magnolia tree at the corner of Ashland and Peachtee; the tree also obstructs the view of people, on foot or in a car, coming toward Ashland from Peachtree or Gordon.)
A STOP sign on Ashland, at the corner of Ashland and Peachtree, would make this intersection much safer because it would force vehicles entering Ashland from Oberlin to come to a full stop in a position where they can actually see what is ahead of them in the intersection.
(Personally I don't think a STOP sign is needed for cars coming from the other direction on Ashland, because they have 100% visibility as they approach the intersection and cars/pedestrians in the intersection can see them coming.)
So… I’d request that the traffic engineers who are looking at this problem intersection consider installing a STOP sign at the corner of Ashland and Peachtree. And thanks to you Peachtree Mom for suggesting it.

During the week of 12-10-2016 (see below), a traffic flow test was done at several locations. Can we ask for the raw Data from this survey and from the previous one done in 2015 per http://seeclickfix.com/issues/774278-intersection-issue
This data would allow us to pursue this as recommended with the Wade CAC and other City Departments. thank you

Staff is conducting an intersection study at this location to determine appropriate signage to improve safety and traffic flow. We appreciate your patience.

Im excited to say that I just got off the phone with the city transportation department
1) Intersection Issue: they have already recommended stop signs at Ashland and Peachtree/Gordon and expect to finalize it within weeks! WIN
2) No Parking issue: . He said it has awareness but only the principle cam move it forward officially.
3) Sidewalks: there is a petition to be filled out for each street. 50% plus 1 vote of neighbor must sign/complete form for them to move on the project. I've filled this out for Peachtree and will be delivering forms. Sidewalks will increase property values and increase safety in our neighborhood.

Waiting for stop lines to be drawn at new stops after new paving. I'm going to keep this open until that is complete. thank you
