Description
There have been no white "Speed Limit 55 MPH" signs on this stretch of road for approximately 4 years now! The speed limit has always been (and should remain) 55 mph along the entire length of Kings Highway (except for the 40 MPH zone traveling south near the traffic light at Glenerie Blvd.) Many motorists on this road are unaware that the speed limit is 55 MPH because there are no white signs, and they needlessly hold up traffic behind them by only driving about 30-35 MPH! There are many yellow "Recommended Speed 45 MPH" signs around the turns, but there are absolutely no white 55 MPH signs whatsoever for approximately 3 miles! Many drivers even pass on the double yellow lines because there aren't any dotted lines for passing zones along the entire roadway! This is very inconvenient for the people who use this road as a way to cut around the horrendous traffic through Saugerties!

That would be great if there weren't any clueless or distracted drivers on that road who feel compelled to hold up all the other traffic behind them by going 35-40 MPH. Then traffic would purr along nicely at 55 MPH like it's supposed to.
But EVERY SINGLE time I am on that road, there's always some good ol' "Granny Grunch" or "Ma and Pa Kettle" driving their 82 Buick at 35 MPH because they haven't the FOGGIEST idea that the speed limit is 55 MPH because there are NO 55 MPH SIGNS on that road!!!!!!
Then, they get a line of 10 cars behind them all weaving, honking, and tailgaiting (and even passing on the double yellow lines), simply because Ulster County won't put up two or three cheap little 55 MPH signs along that stretch of highway!!!
WHAT MORONS!!!!

I am sure the county WANTS people to remain ignorant about the speed limit here. Just to fry you, they might put an "End 40 MPH" sign, which still leaves the granny guessing.
BTW, not only do you get granny Mearle and grandpa Ed who drive slow, there are many self rightous out there, who think the speed limit SHOULD be 40, and feel it is their duty and RIGHT to keep everyone else from doing 55.
I wish cops would enforce the law, stating one may not drive in a manner which interferes with the regular traffic flow, including slow driving.

The real issue is why were the original 55 MPH signs even taken down in the first place? They used to be there a long time ago, but somehow they vanished and were never replaced.
The speed limit is supposed be posted as soon as possible near the entry into a road after turning in from a major intersection (in this case it's Route 32). So, theoretically, the first 55 MPH sign should be posted somewhere between the entrance to the Mobil gas station and the entrance to Railroad Avenue onto King's Highway.
Ideally, speed limit signs should be posted every mile thereafter, to reinforce the legal speed limit along a certain stretch of road, so that motorists would know what speed they are supposed to go. However in this case, there is not a single white 55 MPH sign anywhere on that road until you reach the 40 MPH zone near Glasco Turnpike.
So the question still remains: If it's being lowered TO 40 MPH for a certain zone, what is it being lowered FROM on the stretch that you are already traveling on?!?!
People EXPECT to see posted speed limit signs on their roads, and the lack of it here is absolutely unacceptable, especially for people who use that road on a regular basis, who are forced to get stuck behind clueless, inattentive drivers and large, cumbersome trucks who drive much too slowly than what the road can handle.

The speed limit on King's Highway is 55 MPH and it is not dangerous to travel at that speed. The road is mostly flat and open, with only a few minor turns which can safely be negotiated at around 50 MPH.
That's why there is the 40 MPH zone sign when approaching Glasco Turnpike near the traffic light, because the road becomes more trecherous there, not further back near Solite.

Yes, signs are required at the beginning of every road, and at least every mile thereafter.
It is ridiculous to sit behind drivers going 35-40 mph just because they have no clue what the speed limit is because there is no sign! Every time I drive on that road, there are dozens of drivers going too slow which hold up the proper drivers who know that the speed limit is 55!!!!!

STILL NO 55 MPH SIGNS ON THIS COUNTY HIGHWAY!!! STILL DRIVERS CRAWLING ALONG AT 35-45MPH!!!
A COUNTY ROAD WITHOUT ANY WHITE SPEED LIMIT SIGNS IS ILLEGAL!!!
GET SOME 55 MPH SIGNS HERE NOW SO PEOPLE STOP GETTING SLOWED DOWN BY INCOMPETENT SLOW DRIVERS!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!! IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 8 YEARS WITHOUT ANY WHITE 55 MPH SIGNS HERE!!!! ONLY YELLOW "RECOMMENDED SPEED" SIGNS!!!
AND THE LACK OF PASSING ZONES ON THIS ROAD MAKES DRIVING BEHIND SLOW DRIVERS INSUFFRABLY FRUSTRATING!!!!
STOP THE ROAD RAGE!!! PUT UP 55 MPH SIGNS NOW PLEASE SO DRIVERS KNOW HOW FAST THEY CAN DRIVE!!!! WE ARE BEGGING FOR THIS SIMPLE FIX WHICH WOULD HELP GET TRAFFIC MOVING INSTEAD OF CRAWLING ALONG AT 10 MPH!!!!! PLEASE!!!! WE ARE BEGGING YOU, ULSTER COUNTY!!!

It is ILLEGAL to arbitrarily slow traffic by removing Speed Limit signs. It is VANDALISM. ALL State, County, and Federal roads and highways must have proper, white SPEED LIMIT signs to be placed in pre-determined locations along the highway. And in places where one has been knocked down due to an accident or vandalism, it must be replaced. There are no exceptions.
And furthermore, the DOT (or whoever the governing body is) must conduct a proper Traffic Speed Study in order to determine the 85th Percentile. But you probably don't know that...
You can't just put up (or take down) a Speed Limit sign just because YOU FEEL LIKE slowing down traffic!
Anyway, who appointed YOU "God of Ulster County Highways"??? You don't know ANYTHING!! "Oh, I know for a FACT that NO signs are going up!" Who are YOU to just DECREE these kinds of things whenever you feel like it?!
Secondly, whoever you are, you are an absolute menace to society because you think you are all high-and-mighty just because you have a government job for the County. And your ignorance and arrogance is disgusting, because you are so haughty that you think you can just tell people how to live their lives just because YOU feel like it! You are EXACTLY what is wrong with this country! I'm sure you are a government-paid, tenured lackey who has no clue what you are doing, and probably hasn't for the 35 years you've been there!
