I also have concerns about the safety of our children getting to and from school. Heineberg Rd. Is our connector from Shore Rd. to CP Smith. All 4 corners are completely impassable, requiring us to walk/bike in the roadway. This project should be a priority to complete as soon as possible.

Please at least get one side fixed ASAP! My kids are new bikers and it is scary having them traverse the torn up blacktop while simultaneously contending with traffic (because they are forced to bike in the street) at the intersection of Heinburg and Farrington. If one of the corners at the Farrington intersection was replaced we would be so much safer. The guys on the job told me they will be there another month. Really?? Seems like really crazy timing for this project!

I could not agree more with the above comments! It is a safety hazard for children and should have been completed before school began. It is a huge oversight on the part of the DPW that needs to be rectified ASAP. Perhaps they need to consider having this project worked on during evening hours and weekends (in addition to business hours) in order to speed up the time it will take to complete the project?

A huge pedestrian/ bicycle artery during the school year and this crossed no one's mind? No information circulated to community about the plan and no safe alternatives provided. A large and unfortunate oversight by the DPW that's created a worse safety issue than sidewalk conditions in the meantime.

Public Works has the ability to make safe pedestrian detours around construction. They have the barriers and they can pour gravel or asphalt to make temporary ramps. They did this for several projects on North Winooski Ave. If they didn't do it here it is because the department is not prioritizing continued service on these sidewalks. I highly recommend calling the Mayor 865-7272.

I can understand the frustration, but isnt there a sidewalk on the other side of Farrington that can be used? Cant the children ride their bike on the Heinburg sidewalk and detour around the corner construction (through grass or road) and cross the street to Farrington? Parents and children have no issue walking on the grass or in the street by Flynn, there aren't sidewalks. Aren't bicycles allowed on the Street? I guess I'm surprised at the level of outrage over this. Id be happy to see Burlington being repaired.

Thank you for reaching out with your concerns. The DPW first received notification of the issue early on Thursday morning and immediately notified the contractor that they were required to install temporary ramps, and make an accessible path between the two sidewalks to allow for bicycle and pedestrian traffic to pass the corners that were under construction. This work was completed before the afternoon school children returned through the area on Thursday afternoon. In addition there is a crossing guard at the intersection of North Ave and Heineberg who has been working with the Contractor to ensure that there are safe paths in/around the construction areas for the school bicycle and pedestrian traffic; as well as ensuring traffic is held until everyone has safely crossed the road.

The current schedule as work in the area wrapping up over the next two weeks. As it relates to the curb ramps for the sidewalk they are being completed this week. The ramp at North Ave expected to be open to travel Thursday AM, and the corresponding end at Farrington open Friday AM; if not earlier. We understand the difficulty that traveling around/adjacent to a construction site can pose and appreciate your patience as the work concludes.

With regards to the overall project schedule. The work on the paving contract commenced in early July, with the start of Burlington's fiscal year. It is unfortunate that the work has to overlap with the start of school, as it does throughout the City on this project and others. However with the limited construction season for this type of work there will always be overlaps. We have noted your concerns with regards to outreach, and are always looking for ways to better reach our community with notifications of work. For this concern it seems working with the Burlington School District to include a notification to parents ahead of school starting will be something we pursue for next year's projects.

The contractor only built temporary ramps that allow north/south travel on the sidewalk on the east side of the avenue. There are zero provisions for any east/west travel across the avenue on the one crosswalk between Heineberg and St. Marks.

Per DPW Engineer: sidewalk/crosswalk reopened. Thank you for your patience while we work to improve the street and sidewalk. Just a reminder that final paving is scheduled for middle of next week; please follow directions of traffic control while work is occurring - this issue is closed.
