description fits a person i noticed wandering to and fro around Edwards St. & Foster St. this morning. Around 8 am. Maybe a laborer showing up for a contractor, but this guy had a tool in his hand that he tried to hide ( possibly bolt cutters/crow bar)
A dark skinned male,white tee shirt, 5'9" a bit stocky

My bike was stolen from Avon Street Sunday night 04/04/10. It was locked on the porch inside our courtyard where I always keep it. If anyone sees a green/dark turquoise Fuji hybrid with step-through frame, that's my bike and I want it back.

Two bikes were stolen from our garden shed on lower Canner Street two weeks ago.
1. Vintage folding bike. Victoria in blue.
2. Vintage Raleigh in black, a little beat up, but in a good way.
I saw a kid riding the folding bike a couple of days later whipping down Grove Street against traffic.

The man on Edwards and Foster is probably one of the guys working on 92 Edwards - he matches that description and has been doing work there for the last year or so, off and on.

Maybe he is related to the owners/tenants at 92 Edwards.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that he was the bike thief - rather, that he probably isn't, since he was doing legitimate brick work out front this week.

Possibility it's students from a nearby school. Current students/ex students/with croonies. Next in line would be caretakers and odd job robs. They have a good cover. Then there's the phony meter guy. Throw in an escaped prisoner or something and the list is complete. - i guess ya never know huh ?
Next door the hired Property Manager posted a sign on the building, "property managed by so so,and call # etc." It was a bad idea as "applicants" came around at all hours, some with vans and pick up trucks and stood around,then ran with something, in one case an unlocked bike.

My bike was stolen out of our garage between March 29th and April 3rd. . .not sure when. We're on Clinton Ave.

COME ON PPL THIS PERSON IS OBVIOUSLY INVOLVED IN SOME MASTERMINDED BIKE STEALING RING THAT GOES AS DEEP AS INVOLVING PAYED OFF COPS, OR HE'S JUST A CRACKHEAD LOOKING FOR EASY MONEY FOR MORE DRUGS, WHO KNOWS=]

2 bikes were stolen from mechanic street may 23rd. (one has been recovered, one has not)

i'm sure most of these stolen bikes were locked up outside... c'mon folks, y'all make it too easy for these kids to steal your bikes. Bring them inside at night, and for crissakes lock up those quick release wheels and seats. Kids case this neighborhood for bikes because they are so easy to steal. Take better care to secure your stuff and it won't get stolen.

If Yale offered classes in common sense and street smarts our cops might have more time to spend on neighborhoods with more immediate crime issues.

this has nothing to do with yale or common sense.

sure, some people leave their bikes around with an easy-to-cut cable lock or no lock at all. these lead to crimes of convenience, likely.

however, mine was stolen from an indoor hallway locked in my apartment building. recently, several people have posted on elm city cycling that theirs have been taken from inside garages, basements, tucked-away backyards, porches.

this likely is the work of repeat offenders, not afraid of tresspassing, and breaking and entering.

yes, NHPD has a lot to worry about. but do not diminish the theft of a bicycle to less immediate a crime issue. first, bikes can be someones primary mode of transportation. second, they can be very expensive. third, again, a criminal breaking and entering into your living space is a terrifying way to be violated.

Does NHPD ever do bike theft "stings"? Plenty of info out there about how to do them.

Taking away someone's form of transportation to work is a serious crime against their livelihood -- which is presumably why auto theft is considered such a serious offense.
