Love this. Would it make more sense to close Temple? Neither have businesses on them though I guess Temple has churches and college has Yale as apropo for their names.

Or are you suggesting a closure of college between Church and Crown?

I think there's a way to solve for both. It is increasingly likely that automated vehicles will transport and drop off non public transit commuting people in the next decade leading to reduced need for parking and road capacity. It may seem like far away but we can start planning for this future as a city and be ahead of the curve when we get there.

Why not close the downtown area around the green, build a free downtown parking area on long wharf, and have a free train shuttle or bus shuttle to state st from union station?

Not sure if Temple makes more sense. It's all discussed in the blog I wrote on betweentworocks. I think between Church and Chapel only. Otherwise would be too much. But I think for one block, a ped-only zone would be awesome.

Who's going to maintain this proposed pedestrian walkway...Yalies?? The city already practically gave Yale a walkway under the Daniels administration. What a ripoff that was! Are you going to plow snow in the winter? Are you going to repair pavement and sidewalks when needed? Are you going to pick up litter and trash? And what about police protection? Is Yale PD going to be responsible? And medical and fire emergencies?

Just because it would be convenient for you doesn't make it justifiable. Run the numbers, kiddo!

Benhv 12 years ago I was just like you, thinking more people would use public transportation, walk, ride bikes, etc. In 12 years that hasn't happened. Because while New Haven is a good little city for walking about downtown, but it is very difficult and time consuming. Not to mention expensive to get anywhere outside of Downtown. You.are also surrounded by a state full of people who do not want to give up the freedom of a car.

The good news is that it HAS changed dramatically in the last twelve years!
We're now one of the higher non car commuting small cities in the Country and bicycles and pedestrians are prolific.
Amongst my co-workers roughly 70% of them do not take a car to work.

Closing off Temple Street is not really a solution, it would require rerouting most existing bus lines The B, the D, the F, the G, the O, the Q, the Z come down Elm St to Temple—the B & the O continuing straight on Temple past Chapel, the D, the F, the G, & the Q turn left from Temple onto Chapel. The J & the M come down Whitney Avenue continuing on Temple past Chapel. Just a thought from a current bus rider (almost 10 years).

I understand the livability issues, but whether you like it or not, the city needs cars to brings goods and people to enjoy what the city has to offer, and I'm all for less cars but there's nothing we can really do until we have a proper transportation system. Fight for that first.
