You are correct that the reason for the work at night is partially to avoid disruption of the Bangerter Highway traffic during the day, but also because moving the construction equipment into place is far safer at night. Crews are doing their best to reserve grinding near the most populated areas for earlier in the evenings.

Concrete grinding on the northbound lanes will be wrapping up in the next week or two. It will be followed by grooving, or recessing the concrete in preparation for striping.

As grinding ends on the northbound lanes, it will then commence on the southbound lanes.

The noise at night has to stop! I live almost 2 miles away and it is unbearable. Need to manage this during the day. Not impressed with the nose management or consideration of thousands of people that live in the area. There has to be a better time to do this. ....

Also when is this expected to be done?!

I cannot believe the racquet that starts up each evening. Sounds like dump trucks and cement pumps and digging. The most disruptive sound is the rhythmic noise that gets faster and louder and then changes pitch and speed. Around 9:00 pm it gets too loud to even talk over with our windows closed and we are a few streets over off 3200 west and about 105th south. Even having windows closed and TV on does not cover the extremely loud engine and humming noises from the large machines and makes it difficult to get to sleep and stay asleep. Often the noises wake me during the night. Who decided to do this LOUD work at night when people are trying to sleep. I wouldn't even notice the noise during daylight hours. It's our community and our money funding this, then why do we not have a say? How many complaints does it take to make a change? This simply can't go on. I'm asking my neighborhood to join with me in filing formal complaints to the city, and governing bodies. How inconsiderate.

You are concerned over impacingt virtually non-existent traffic from 9am-3pm yet have zero concern over disrupting thousands of peoples sleep night after night from ~8pm to~ 3am or worse? Do we have Sokolich or some other sociopath making these decisions? I have contacted a lawyer. At this point the first recommendation is to file suit in small claims court. I have the noise recorded on my phone with GPS coordinates and time stamps. I also have video with the noise when I drove over to observe. This was around 2am. I guarantee the court is going to side with me for the at least 6 days this has been going on over the past two months. Its disrupting my ability to do my job during regular hours because it is simply impossible to sleep. I live about a mile from the construction. I cant even imagine what its like for the people right next to this. The people making these decisions at UDOT need to simply be fired. Since most understand little more than the stick or money I intend to go after their money then just maybe they will develop a caring about the people that pay their wages.

How long is this insane drone humming going to continue for???? It is driving us crazy every single night. Why start at nine pm until 4 am.? I can hear it everynight with windows shut tv on and earplugs in. Please wed like some peace. Give it a break for awhile. Its like torture. How long will this go on?

We very much apologize for the noise and disruption that construction is causing for you. The noise that you are hearing is caused by concrete grinders, which are grinding the surface of the Bangerter Highway between 9000 South and the I-15 interchange. The grinding work will extend the life of the roadway and create a smoother, quieter and safer ride. Work is taking place at night in order to avoid disruption of the daytime traffic and to safely move the large equipment in and out of the construction zone. Traffic engineers have estimated that closing even one lane of traffic during the daytime hours would create several miles of backup.

UDOT and the contractor have met to try and find ways to reduce the noise. The contractor is trying to perform grinding in the most populous areas earlier in the night, and have also reduced the number of grinding passes. They have also brought in additional grinders to perform the work concurrently so that the number of nights required is reduced. Still another possibility that they have discussed is to move a portion of the grinding to daytime hours. This can only be done on the inside shoulder and a portion of the first lane, while the second and third lanes will still require grinding at night.

Even after applying some of the options, there will still be significant work that must be performed at night, so we are anticipating that the noise will still continue for 20 - 25 more work nights. Crews are scheduled to have the work completed by Thanksgiving. Not all of those nights will be in your area, so the project and the noise are finally winding down.

Last Night was Ridiculously loud between 12:15am and 2:45am with the construction work! Please try to end by 11:00pm so we can sleep! Sleep deprivation causes health issues, traffic accidents, etc........We Need Rest!!!!!
