If for some reason the racks can't go on Person St the side streets could certainly accommodate them.

I agree with Mark Turner, above. If DOT doesn't allow the city to put the racks on Person, there is no reason there can't be some on side streets like Pace, Boundary, & Franklin. Anyone with a bike would be happy to use a rack around the corner than to have to use a tree.

Did anything come of this? Would love to see more bike racks in Raleigh! +1 the idea of taking on street parking for multiple bike use parking.

On Feb 13 at noon there will be a talk from the Bike-Pedestrian Coordinator at the Raleigh City Museum. It would be good to find out what the plans are. And what does she do anyway? I know they used not to monitor SCL.

While the City currently does not have any funding for purchase of bicycle racks (funded in the past through an NCDOT grant), I've been in contact with Jennifer Baldwin, the City's bicycle-pedestrian coordinator to see if there are any creative solutions for both funding and placement.

Maybe they should put a few in Moore Square !!Maybe it would be a reason to clean it up some ,More people come to the area, would help the city see it need help !

I really don't think that it's that hard to park a bike without damaging trees or getting in the way. And the recurrent suggestion that more people would bike if we only had more bike racks is just plain silly. I don't think we'll have trouble keeping up with the growth in demand for bicyclists to park their bikes. I'd be happy to find money in the city budget for the relatively modest amounts needed. And it would be wasteful to start spending zillions of dollars on bike racks in excess of the short term growth in cycling. It's not unlike sidewalks in the middle of nowhere leading to nowhere. The city needs to be just as smart with tax dollars as it is with managing growth and infrastructure.

If you expect people to walk two blocks out of their way to park their bikes in a designated rack, you're kidding yourself. I have nothing against bikes or bike racks but there's a silliness to the recurrent suggestion that all these inhibited bikers would suddenly appear if only we had more bike racks. It's not too tough to fit bike racks in as demand rises. Cluttered sidewalks with too many bikers? I personally haven't seen this dreaded phenomenon much in Raleigh. Or is that a joke? Or maybe there's a bike rack salesman on these boards?

Ignoring all of the posts about the fact that bicyclists don't need a place to park... because I ride up there all the time and I certainly do need a place to park. With all of the new shops, restaurants, and stores opening up in the Franklin Street area, this is a concern. Could these improvements be wrapped into the Blount/Person corridor study?

Did anything ever occur with looking for another source of funding for the racks?

Phase One of the Blount-Person Corridor Study implementation was included in the recently approved Transportation Bond. The City also recently approved an initiative for crowdfunding bicycle racks. The bike-ped coordinator is aware of the request for this area, and will keep it on the radar for any upcoming installations or initiatives.

The city is looking into crowd sourcing bike racks and other objects.
This area's lack of bike parking was listed as an example.

Need a bike rack in front of or near Nuvonivo at 111 E Hargett Street for three reasons! Reason #1 - Parents have a spot to park their bikes and kids bikes safely. Reason #2 - No street parking is available in front of 111 E. Hargett due to the right lane being needed for bus access, so it would be a plus to have parking outside for some type of vehicle. Reason#3 (and the most important) - a bike rack would make a perfect barrier between pedestrian/stroller traffic on the side walk and the onslaught of buses pulling out of the bus station. So for safety issues, a bike rack would be an addition that could satisfy many needs.
