On May 4, City Council hosted a public workshop to review the proposed operating and capital budgets for the upcoming two-year City budget cycle. In the proposed budget, staff is recommending significant investments to improve the Civic Center Parking Garage with an emphasis on improving safety and security. An important first step will be the ability to close the garage at night. This requires extensive modification to the first floor and vehicle access area. In addition, the entire facility will be painted, which will improve the look and feel, and make graffiti easier to remove. There will be lighting upgrades and funding to install motorized gates.

The Alameda Police Department is also committed to being part of the solution. Effective immediately, they will increase presence and patrols through the facility. With time for design and construction, we will start to see the improvements at the start of the new year. Until then, the Parking Operator will continue to do what it can for cleanliness and graffiti abatement. Please do not hesitate to report any suspicious activity.
