Veronica, you are a bit misguided. Travelling westbound on Bellflower you enter a school zone with flashing lights. Regardless of the intersection, state law says you are still in a school zone until a speed limit sign or end school zone sign is displayed. In addition, northbound traffic can see a school zone sign (non-illuminated) just north of Bellflower and an illuminated end school zone sign over the roadway that is only lit when the flashers are on. All of this gives everyone travelling there more than enough warning of the school zone. It is a matter of people respecting the laws.

the school zone is not just for Bellflower Elem. Lake Catholic also falls into this school zone are.
When you are between the flashing yellow lights on 306 you can see the back of these signs are lit that display school zone. if the wording is not lit the school zone speed is not in effect.

@ Eric-- I haven't a clue what that inane statement means. @ Veronica--Regardless of what you think the motive is to have a speed limit there, I've seen children about. It would be a terrible shame for one to be injured or killed just because someone is in too big a hurry to get to the next red light.

If it is a no walk school area why can't the city/state remove the school zone and install a traffic light with a left turn lane into elementary school? That would solve part of the "I'm in a hurry to get to my very important job" speeding issue. Drivers would have to stop for the red light which will slow them down a lot and by the time they get to Bellflower Rd going South they would hit another red light!

Slow down - do the school zone speed limit - it only takes a minute to get through the area. Fair warning - the cost of the speeding will upset you.

Anytime i have seen the lights flashing, there are no kids to be seen anywhere but other times there are kids playing out front or walking on the sidewalks but no flashing lights. Again it's no common sense. And this is a high school, I think the kids are old enough to know not to run in front of cars. School zones go overboard with their locations, timing, and level of schools they're used in.

Bob, Bellflower is an elementary school. I'm sure you're an expert on assessing activity patterns, in the two minutes or so it takes you to travel through that SZ, but I must digress; common sense would dictate, the most active patterns appear when the highest concentration of children are present. Also, your statement that SZs go overboard in regards to locations, timing, and level of schools they are used in, makes no sense at all. (???) SZs are are in-front of schools; SZs are in force during the beginning and end of the school day; and used at all schools. Nothing arbitrary there. Please clarify.

A lot of people don't realize that this school zole affects traffic on Bellflower as well as 306. When you turn off Bellflower and on to 306 -- you are still in the school zone. Even when you turn south on 306. Also, the school zone is in effect for a long time because there are two schools the begin and end right after one another. I am so tired of abiding by the school zone speed limit only to have someone riding my tale the whole way!

When someone's riding my tail, I like to box them in and slow down even more; just enough so they can't pass me. They get sooo p*ssed. and I have a little fun, too!

There is no doubt that people do not abide the speed limits in school zones, but I think we need to also check the speed of those who have brought there children to school, drop them off and fly out of the school drive way faster than 20 mph. I have seen this several times especially if there is a long drive out of the school. Bellflower is a short drive, but I have had people come out of that drive, cut others off and not abide by the 20 mph going south. The drive at Lake Catholic is even longer and I know people drive extremely fast out of that drive and it is right there where the children are at Bellflower. People need a reality check everywhere when it comes to driving the speed limits.
We need more police presents everywhere.
In retrospect I can understand why more tickets are not given out, because if I had to deal with the people today, with there attitudes, I wouldn't want to appear in traffic court with them.
I have a daughter-in-law who is a policewomen, out of state, and she has told many stories of how people act and what they say. I don't know how the police deal with this daily.

@ Speed--Yes, the average citizen would not want to deal with an irate public, but police are paid to deal with these people, so there is absolutly no excuse not to. In fact, they make very good money for a job that might require an element of danger and effort for 1/4 of the time they're on the job. The rest of the time, they're driving around, or sitting behind a stand of trees. My neighbor is a cop and we live in a McMansion. My home was over $300K, I'm sure his was too, and his wife stays home with the kids. So, it's not rocket science to know he's making an excelent wage. So, to reiterate my point--The police get paid to watch the SZ and write tickets to offenders.

It's not enforced at Grant school on Lost Nation, or McKinley either. Plus, the idiots racing to the Rt. 2 overpass make it even worse. It would be nice if Willoughby could do a lot more in that area, and not only during school hours.

I see police there all the time, i see them pulling speeders over all the time, i drive this road everyday and i see police there all the time....

I have only seen police there on a regular basis since this went up. Otherwise, I've lived in the area for 15 years and can count on both hands the times I've seen police monitoring the SZ.

Hello my name is Karl Hubrath and recently I have been driving through this area when the school zone has been flashing. There were a lot of cars zooming by me like I was sitting still. I could not believe the disrespect in the law. I may be over the top and I am sorry in advanced but people in Mentor have become very arrogant. Some people even want to make it sociably acceptable to illegally park in handicapped parking. I see this all the time at the place I work part time at BP on heisley road and route 2. I am all for enforcing a school zone that only takes a minute to get through. My husband sped up to soon at the end of the school zone (going N on Rt 306 at the side street by the school zone sign) and of course the patrolman was right there and so was the ticket! Watch out for that last 20-30 feet.

Thank you for replying to my reply, really. I was referring to this entire school year. LOL, You are to funny you know that. I guess what I classify as recent you don’t classify as recent. Or just to respond, at least I am not saying that I am an engineer or something like that; anyone can drive down a street, no? Lol. Don’t take my word for it, next school year drive down 306 during school and you will see what I see, ok? Lol. You are too funny, God bless.

The problem is that no children walk to these schools. No kids means no reason to slow it down. I go about 25 travelling southbound on 306 around 7:15-7:30am. I've never seen a child. If there were more kids, I'd be more careful.
