Description

The new traffic signal in front of the railroad tracks on Great Plain Avenue (downtown) shows a green signal while pedestrians are still allowed to cross on the crosswalk. This creates a situation where pedestrians are permitted to enter and cross the crosswalk while the vehicles are shown a green signal, which isn't what a motorist would expect and creates a potentially dangerous situation, since the pedestrian can't see the whether or not the signal for the vehicles on GPA is green or red. The driver on GPA wouldn't typically expect to see a pedestrian crossing when they have a green signal showing either. Typically, there would be a signal controlling both ends of the crosswalk. While I understand that the crosswalk will eventually be eliminated, having a painted crosswalk without pedestrian signal for the crosswalk creates a potentially hazardous situation for the crossing pedestrian. Either the signal should be turned off temporarily or the crosswalk markings and crossing warning signs should be eliminated
