I've been nearly rear-ended several times stopping for people in the crosswalk here. The flashing lights help so much with safety along Pine St. so I hope the city strongly considers adding them here.

I have mixed feelings about this. I agree it is dangerous in its current configuration, and the flashing lights would likely improve pedestrian safety somewhat. But the reason it is dangerous is the the crosswalk is in the middle of a short section of busy road with short-duration turn lights at each end, so drivers in either direction are looking ahead at the lights and not expecting to see pedestrians. Part of me thinks it's not a great location for a crosswalk - and it's only a short distance to the crosswalk at Park Street.

It seems from the votes that there is a great deal of support for a protected pedestrian crossing at this location. This is the historical crossing point for people accessing the park from the neighborhoods. The danger is created by drivers who jeopardize pedestrian safety. The three approaches suggested by this situation are traffic calming, increased enforcement and signalization/signage. Eliminating crosswalks not only punishes pedestrians and cuts people off from their park but is proven to be ineffective because people cross at the most convenient location anyway.

I'd endorse pinching the roadway to two lanes at this point with a couple of bumpouts for pedestrians at either end of the crosswalk. A shorter southbound, left turn lane could be established a little farther to the south of the crosswalk.
