Description
My neighbors swale tree has grown out of control and is now starting to grow over my roof, which is a hurricane hazard! With the hurricane season fast approaching the branches need to be cut away from over my roof! Other problems such as mildew and termites will also be avoided by this tree maintenance! Hope to see action on this problem taken asap! Thank you for your caring! Sincerely, M. Munson

I am forwarding this request to Jeanette Wofford, our City's Arborist. She will check out the situation. She likes to call to discuss the issue but you have not included your telephone number. Either please respond to this email or call at me 954-434-2300. Thank you, Diane Patanelli

Good afternoon Ms. Munson,
The City's Arborist has visited the location and determined that there is sufficient distance between the tree canopy and the your home and no trimming by the City will be done at this time. If you would like to do some minor trimming on the tree you are welcome to do that as long as you use a Broward County licensed tree trimming contractor. You may call the office to speak with Jeanette if you have any questions. Thank you,

I respectfully disagree with the City Arborist, the canopy is growing over my roof, see attached picture! As a longtime Cooper City resident I feel disrespected by the very people that my taxes pay for, to care of us when in need! I keep all my trees trimmed on my property, often twice a year! Your responsibility is to keep the swale trees trimmed! Over the last few years I have watched the tree trimming company come by, spend five to ten minutes on each tree cut one or two branches off each tree and leave! If our taxes were spend wisely I think we could get a much better company to trim our trees correctly, so they are hurricane safe and away from homes! I was asked for my phone number, yet no one called me so I could be there to show them what I'm concerned about! Lastly, the liability for an overgrown tree is with the city, not me and to ask me to have it trimmed on my dime is outrageous! So please, reconsider and trim this tree!
Sincerely, M Munson

Ms. Munson, thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I fully understand your concerns but the city is unable to provide the level of services you are requesting. As discussed, our contract dictates the level of services, and the tree trimming services the City currently provides is mainly for elevation of tree canopy over roadways and sidewalks. As evidenced by the City's extensive tree canopy, we do not try to contain the overall size of the trees. The City has to be consistent on services provided for all residents per the terms of our contracts. Thank you, Jeanette Wofford

Thank you for your response and coming out to talk with us and discussing our concerns. Unfortunately we heard you loud and clear "NO"! You basically told us that you agree with us, that it would be safer to trim the branch away from the roof, but your hands are tied do to Ordinances, Bylaws, Budget and a Contract that is up for renewal! I asked Ms. Wofford to fight for us and see what she could do to help us and I got no response which in my mind translated to another "NO"! Maybe she is not able to I don't know! But.....
Since Ordinances, Bylaws and Contracts are there to help and support the residence of Cooper City, I would suggest it's time to change or amend them and we need to talk and work with the people in charge of doing that! Also, since the contract for the tree trimming company is being renewed I strongly advocate for negotiating a deal that includes also, clearing a safe distance from homes, cutting one or two more branches off the tree, for the safety of residents and their property, this is not to much to ask! This is a very lucrative deal for any tree trimming company and with competition the price can be negotiated, so there won't be much of an increase if any on the cost per tree! So please forward this to all the powers to be, including Commissioners and Mayor! Hope to hear back from you and if I can be of assistance I would be happy to help! Let's keep Cooper City the best place to live for our families!
Sincerely, M. Munson
