We receive hundreds of these requests per year on virtually every stretch of Alameda’s 125 miles of streets. Alameda's streets suffer from $12-60 million in deferred maintenance, as a result of years of underinvestment. This may explain the cause of the service you have requested. Alameda’s streets are, overall, considered “fair” by a metric employed by Bay Area cities called the pavement condition index (PCI). Alameda’s PCI of 68 is higher than our neighbors in Oakland, San Leandro, and Berkeley. Yet a "fair" pavement condition index still means that, due to decades of underinvestment, many of Alameda’s streets and most of its residential streets are in poor condition, as the limited resources we have are being focused on the busiest arterials. Public Works’ response to your request will depend on the type of request. Pothole requests are typically completed within 30 days, depending on weather conditions. More complicated street repairs, including to curb and gutter, might have to wait for years when a street is due for repaving. The more complicated requests are routed to be evaluated by an engineer to help determine which streets to repave given the funding constraints. San Antonio was originally on our list to pave in 2016. When we announced our intentions, PG&E informed us that they had plans to replace an old gas main there, which would involve trenching the entire length of San Antonio from Park Street to Paru Street. So we paved the western portion of San Antonio, and postponed the rest of the work. PG&E is planning on doing their construction during January-March 2018, and we have scheduled our paving work for the summer of 2018. We understand that this is an inconvenience to the residents, to have to wait another year, but it is much better to have the utility trenching work done before the paving is installed. In the meantime, if you have a specific pothole that needs to be patched right away, please let us know and the work will be added to the maintenance crew's list, to be done as soon as workers, equipment, and good weather are available.

I spoke with the resident on the phone and explained that the street will not be paved until 2018. She is concerned that there are potholes in the street that are so big, cars fall into them, not to mention bicycles. She would like the potholes patched. I said that I would have the pothole crew lead evaluate her block of the street - from Walnut to Oak Street - and patch if warranted. She would like a phone call from you when you come out, so that she can point things out to you.
