Same on Webster Street. Smoking takes place right under the "Smoke Free Zone" sign at Webster and Central. It is a serious health and safety matter. The City Council passed the law because the smoke poses a hazard. It would be great to see the police sometimes walk a beat on Webster and on Park. Critical locations are intersections while waiting to cross, bus stops and outdoor seating areas. One cannot escape the smoke as we have to wait for the signal or for the bus. Enforcement is part of creating a healthy walking environment.

This concern was brought to the attention of the officers patrolling in the Park St. and Webster St. areas.

Walking beats have historically been a regular part of our patrol deployment. Unfortunately, the high call for service volume and our current staffing levels have made it impossible to staff the walking beat regularly. We hope to bring our staffing levels up to the point where we can have regular walking beats again. In the meantime, on the occasional day when staffing does allow, we will deploy a walking beat.
