My main question is whether sharrows or bike route pavement markers would be more appropriate here. I tend to think that—given the low traffic volumes on this road—sharrows would be overkill. Additionally, because any pavement markings would most likely run only from the summit to where Old English Dr joins in, sharrows might indicate to some drivers that bikes are not welcome on the remainder of the road (back down the hill). What do you think?

I have included a photo of a bike route pavement marking used in New York City and Portland, OR (and possibly other cities I have never visited). The circular marking is about a foot in diameter and is made of thermoplastic. They are employed after and before intersections, and periodically in between. Unlike sharrows, they are not intended to be seen by drivers; rather, they are meant for way-finding use by bike riders.

I recommend sharrows between the intersection of Orange and Cold Spring/Mitchell and where Old English Drive joins into English Drive, installed in accordance with the preliminary MUTCD guidance on shared lane markings:

I also recommend bike route pavement markings (as described above) along the length of Old English Drive.

There should be a bicycle route marked up the hill on the Hamden approach as well. These would help alert drivers to be careful and stay alert while driving up that side.

Mark, do you mean signed bike route, sharrows, or both? Also, how on earth are we going to get Hamden on board?
