I agree. This crosswalk could definitely be safer. This is a high pedestrian-traffic crosswalk on a busy road. Visibility is often decreased by all the parked cars. Flashing signs, at the very least should be installed. Thanks.

I have heard of many neighbors who have had a negative experience or "near miss" (of themselves) in this area. I strongly advise that the city take action. This is a very fast moving spot, a straightaway, on Lakeshore and definitely dangerous. We really need consider funding embedded embedded lights in the street at these places.

crosswalks that are unlighted are a hazard for both drivers and walkers. i slow down when i approach the crosswalks because i have been shocked to see someone at the last second. but i live here and know how to navigate the area. many people from out of the area come to enjoy the lake but have no idea of these hazards.

There are several pedestrian crosswalks around our neighborhood that are very dangerous due to the fact there are no stop signs or lights, and they are heavily used to gain access the Lake or restaurants. The condition becomes graver when dusk approaches and vehicles do not see pedestrians in the crosswalks. They need to be better LIT! This area on Lakeshore Avenue, adjacent to the Cleveland Cascade is one of those most dangerous places as well, as the crosswalk on Grand Avenue & Bellevue where a young woman and her husband were hit. Tragically this resulted in her death. We would like to see this dangerous situation remedied. Please address these issues as soon as possible and make our city a better place. I would like to be kept aware of the status of this situation. Thanks,

I agree that these pedestrian crossings need to be made safer.

There is a median at this crosswalk. At a minimum, signage could be installed like I've seen at many other crosswalks to remind drivers that pedestrians have the right of way.

thanks for the suggestion of the blinking lights. the crosswalk at the Safeway on Grand needs one too. I know of instances where pedestrians were hit by speeding cars there. i hope our city leaders will take action before someone gets injured.

I agree this is one of several very dangerous crosswalks. This needs to be fixed ASAP. Flashing lights, rumble strips, something needs to be done quickly.

It's pretty obvious that something should be done here and quickly before another pedestrian is injured and/or killed - !!

I'm the person who initiated this complaint. I didn't own a car before, but I do now and could see right away that in addition to the desperately needed lights/rumble strips/etc, the parking situation at the Cleveland Cascade crosswalk is dismal. It's so difficult to see if anyone is trying to cross until you're right on top of them. To the dismay of plenty of drivers behind me, I insist on driving the posted speed limit (25 mph) on Lakeshore, and it's still difficult to see when approaching that crosswalk.

There is blatant disregard of the red curb denoting 'No Parking' on the right side of the road as you approach the crosswalk, heading towards the Lakeshore business district. Since the city needs income, why aren't we ticketing people who selfishly park illegally, or the speeders who endanger pedestrians? The red zones should be expanded close to the crosswalk, too. These things aren't difficult or costly -- c'mon, Oakland!

Perhaps the red zones also need to be "refreshed" with new paint since some are barely red any more. That would be a partial but cheap fix.

Indeed, but they should be enlarged as well -- even those parked legally obscure pedestrians as drivers approach the crosswalk.

I'm wondering if people have been passing their concerns about this crosswalk on to city council member, Pat Kernighan? I think that's part of her district. She and her staff tend to be very responsive.

The group I walk with on Wednesday nights, Feet on the Street (Cleveland Heights, beat 15X), has taken it upon ourselves to broach this topic with the appropriate authorities in the City of Oakland. We're in communication with them now. This See/Click/Fix post was one of the actions recommended to us as well. We're trying.....but as you can probably guess, getting things like this into the new budget being discussed this spring is tenuous at best.

Good for you! The new budget won't actually go into affect for months, so it sounds like we need to find the money now for some red paint and lighting, at the very least. If you're beat 15X, you have a very active neighborhood services coordinator.

I would like to see a lit cross walk here, the kind with the button that lights up the cross walk to alert drivers it's very dark and scary at night, can't see pedestrians well

Agree all around and same issue on my street. Outdated and neglected crossing areas combined with lack of speed enforcement is a deadly combination. I,too, drive posted speed limits and have been harassed by other motorists for doing so. It's unfortunate that one cannot feel that safe crossing any of these streets, especially at night. This should be a no-brainer for such a popular and ped/bike popular area.

It is pretty clear to me that the Lakeshore and Grand Ave and other busy crosswalks is a back burner issue for the city. It has been a year since the deadly accident at Bellevue and Grand - which severely injured one and killed the other member of a couple crossing at dark very early in the evening. Driving slowly around Lakeshore encourages those in vehicles behind me to blow their horns at me and tailgate. Do we have to wait until another pedestrian (or several) are killed before the city takes from Peter to pay Paul and improves these dark crosswalks?

Another high traffic location that desperately needs lighting is across Grand Avenue at Bellevue. Several people have been "winged" or outright hit here, including an elderly neighbor (when I lived near there) that ultimately died of his injuries, and a friend who wound up being on disability for several months. This is unacceptable - distracted drivers, drivers who are just too freaking impatient...all of this adds up to disaster. The embedded lights I've seen really alert you to the fact that the crosswalk is activated and there's someone there.

Please note that Oakland has already won grant funding for a pedestrian safety project along Grand Ave, which will include a pedestrian crossing signal at the dangerous Bellevue Ave intersection. A full project description is included below. The funding was awarded some time ago, so I assume the design is nearly finished and the city should be hiring a contractor to complete the project soon.

"HSIP6-04-011 Pedestrian treatments on Grand Avenue crossings. Two pedestrian signals on Grand Ave at Bellevue Ave and Lenox Ave. Project boundaries are Grand Avenue between Park View Terrace and Euclid Avenue. Pedestrian treatments to include raised medians, bulb-outs, signing and striping."
