I completely agree. I recently moved to the neighborhood and I cannot believe the amount of garbage left behind by some of these individuals. Yesterday I watched a car jump the curb and almost strike a bicyclist who was on the canal trail. The jersey barriers and signage are clearly not addressing the problem. Is there anything else we can do? Who should we call when we see violations? Police? Parks Dept?

Hate to tell you nobody cares. I have lived in this neighborhood for over 17 years. I bring my kids to the park, my 9 year old plays basketball. The kids have no respect, I don't really blame them it's the parents. O would never let my kids go there by themselves. Something does need to be done about the littering and smoking. Mybe some fines to people mybe some police presence. Yale police is right there. The alderwoman should spearhead this. It is a nice park we as a community need to take care of it. I have put basketball nets up for years, the latest one I put up 2 months ago is already destoryed. I wish I had an answer for you jeff1 but I don't, and good forbid you tell some to throw there trash in the trash bin. I don't advise that.

This is discouraging for sure. I'll reach out to the alderwoman who I saw lives nearby (practically across the street from the park). Hopefully she can help us find and implement some solutions.

We, too, moved to the area from East Rock in March. On Earth Day, I picked up 7 garbage bags of trash. Only to see it reappear immediately. I have talked with parks personnel who clean the park. They seem to think it's hopeless. I'd like to see some teeth put into current laws such as no vehicle on the property!

That park has no controls, poor lighting. An open space inviting assaults and dumping junk. Really such a shame for that nice big parcel of land to be ignored by the city and Yale PD located right next door.

I hope if many of us reach out to the alder woman, then we can get some traction on this issue. I will continue to call and write to the city (parks dept, alder woman, and anyone else who will listen).

Well. I emailed my alderwoman, the same alderwoman whose area includes this park,twice this week. There was no response. I also emailed the director of the parks & rec dept for the city. Also no response. I'll try again next week. In my old town in CT, when you reached out to local/town officials, you always got a response within a couple of days, if not hours... Guess we're not in Kansas anymore.

I, too, wrote to Jeanette Morrison and have not gotten a response. I see she is up for re-election. You'd think she'd want another vote, at least. Very sad.

Jeanette is usually very responsible and responds quickly. She deserves to be reelected. It is very possible she's on vacation, right?

She certainly could be on vacation, so I'll reach out again next week. Let's all stay persistent and help improve our little section of the town!

Sorry: The "other" category is not well monitored so just seeing this as we clean things up reviewing concerns on the map feature. I do not recall seeing an email on this subject.

We do not permit large scale gatherings at Scantlebury Park without a parking plan that is reviewed by myself, and when questions arise the Alder. During the summer months we have a retired officer on part time for permit enforcement who can help to enforce park rules, if there is a specific time of day please let us know so we can work it into the schedule. PD is ultimately responsible, but permit and parking issues fall behind numerous other calls for service so they often can not be addressed quickly. We have new signage going in that will help to block vehicular entrance at one corner. There is the possibility of creating small scale parking on site to help reduce illegal parking but we are trying to think through how to enforce short term parking so that the spaces are not abused by those looking to avoid paying for parking other places.

Hi Rebecca, The cars parking on the grass happens all the time in the summer. This is a pic showing the well-worn path cars use to enter & exit Scantlebury Park. The location is on Webster Street at the canal trail crossing. Thank you for working to improve our park!

The reason Jeannette Morrison doesn't respond to email, I discovered, is that she "doesn't get" email sent to her via her city address. Seems to think it's a non-problem. I contacted her by phone for another issue.

The park needs LIGHTS at night to discourage the crappy people who dump their crap all over the place AND a police presence from, say, 9 to midnight.

Get rid of the signage that does nothing such as the one halfway into the park that says "No parking." Yeah, by then, well ...

Take a page from East Rock Park and paint the receptacles colorfully, put up signs that encourage people instead of just saying No. Ask them to help the city. It can't hurt. And add lights, lights and more lights.

Please note, lights actually change the rules in the park and would allow patrons there until 10pm. Many people think that lights discourage negative behaviors but in order to achieve that level of deterrence it would create light pollution for everyone in the neighborhood.

Happy to help facilitate a community painting project, all of our painted barrels have been adopted by a school or neighborhood group.

We do have to have signs that say NO in order for the courts to uphold any citations issued for the rule being enforced. We can put up additional signs too, but too many signs start to detract from the natural beauty.

Harriet - We have the fun bus at Scantlebury Park every Tuesday starting June 25th, one of those night might work great for the community painting. Let me know if there is a Tuesday you think a few like minded community members may want to join and I'll get the barrels and supplies for you all and our Fun Bus staff can give advise (a couple of them are art teachers during the school year).
