This is actually worse than is stated in the original post. I believe it is due to the heat expansion but regardless, it is bad. Particularly in the SB left-most lane. It should be treated with a higher priority due to the heat we have been having. It is really bad.

I agree with Jimbo3san above. I originally commented on this over a month ago. The issue has been bad enough to garner several more duplicate reports. What progress is being made? This is a major issue in a high speed, high traffic area.

Thank you for advising us of this issue. These are persistent problems on these "zipper" style expansion joints. Structures is expected in 2019 to re-do these on the North end of 215 from 201 North. I am sure that we understand that these types of bridges are prone to this type of issue and that these sections of I-215 are due for a complete overhaul in the distant future.

What this case is addressing is the severity of the current condition. It is really bad. Has the area at the site been surveyed or analyzed by UDOT? If not, will someone from UDOT please do this? Surely this is out of the ordinary variations to have such and extremely tall edge protruding up on the freeway in both directions.

Though, let's approach this from the supposition that it currently doesn't require any temporary repair...then, under what conditions would a roadway warrant an emergency repair? I would submit to UDOT that it is in that condition now.

I would kindly request that this be analyzed, observed, or just have an engineer just drive over this section at freeway or near freeway speeds, the level of severity will quickly become apparent.

I have spoken with our Structures Division and they are aware of the situation and have been monitoring the area. They explained that the problem is with the approach slabs to the structure over the surplus canal. On the the northbound side the roadway and approach slab have broken up leaving an open joint. On the southbound side, the approach slabs have settled, leaving a lip between the approach slabs and the roadway panel. They explained that a project is scheduled to begin in March 2018. This project will replace the joints and place a thin bonded polymer overlay over the deck and approach slabs. To improve the current situation we will be grinding the roadway concrete panels and placing temporary asphalt patches where needed. This work will be completed in September.

When asked about what warrants an emergency repair they explained that this type of issue is not classified as an emergency since it is a very common situation considering the soil types in Utah as well as climate conditions. A structure emergency is something that potentially compromises the structure's integrity such as the bridge being hit or concrete falling from the underside of the bridge deck.

This section of road is abnormally dangerous and having traffic continue to flow at normal freeway speeds of 70 miles per hour is putting the public at an extream safety risk. What is being done to ensure that motorists are being kept safe until the September repairs are made?

I have seen a Chevy Suburban get sideways , as it went over this bridge expansion joint. I hope that a Suburban or similar does not lose cotrol , and have it's occupants in a crash. Also threre are no signage to warn of this hazzard

^Agreed on the losing control thing. My question is, how can this not be a Public Safety issue? I think you at UDOT need to re-examine what determines and defines an Road Repair Emergency. Becky, how can soil be an issue with this situation in regards to a road repair?

Becky, Thank you for the follow up and the update. It is very much appreciated. I know we all look forward to the work to improve the current situation next month and to the final solution next year.

This situation is ridiculous! It needs to be fixed, not next year, not next month, BUT right now. My vehicle has sustained suspension problems due to this patch of road. UDOT, you need to make this a priority before an accident occurs. I have learned to slow down at this section, but others have not. Please fix this NOW!

I would like to also add my concern about this area. I feel it really is a safety issue with the way that cars bounce after hitting these bridge joints. If you're not expecting it, it can be hard to maintain control. It could cause an accident. I am also concerned about damage to my car.

I received an update from the Structures Division that the project to replace the joints and overlay the deck is scheduled to begin mid-April and will last 90 days.

We recently began a project that will repair the pavement on I-215 from S.R. 201 to 2200 North. For the structures just north of California Ave. the project will fix the joints and apply a thin overlay. Crews have completed the concrete repair work on I-215 between S.R. 201 and 2200 N. There are no further plans for the area outside of needed maintenance until a planned reconstruction project on I-215 between S.R. 201 and North Temple. This project is currently planned for after 2021. Thank you.
